Course Description
Dental Nurses will take notes from the dentists’ dictation for personal records, assist the dental professional during the patient’s treatment and after the patient has been treated, they will clean the surgery, sterilise all the dental instruments and prepare for the next patient.
Dental Nurses provide chair side support to dental professionals across the full range of dental treatment provision. They play a key role in patient support and have responsibility for infection control and health and safety in the workplace.
Potential learners must be employed as a trainee dental nurse in order to undertake this qualification.
The qualification focuses on the following topics:
- Oral & Dental Anatomy and Physiology
- Dental & Oral Diseases & Preventive Practice
- Dental Treatment
- Patient care procedures
The qualification is suitable for:
- Unqualified dental nurses already working as dental nurses
- Qualified but unregistered dental nurses who wish to obtain a dental nursing qualification and be registered with the GDC

There are 6 units that form the Diploma and these total to 50 credits overall.
Entry Criteria
Learners must be at least 16 years of age to achieve this qualification. They must
- be employed in a suitable job role which will allow them to achieve the NVQ criteria
- GCSE’s grades C or above (or equivalent grades) in English / Welsh, Maths and I.T. Learners without these grades may be required to upskill first and will need to complete Level 2 essential skills qualifications in Communication, Application of Number and Digital Literacy.
Delivery
This qualification is carried out through work-based learning and is delivered on a one to one basis. Some online teaching elements may also be needed
Assessment
As part of your training you will be required to complete a portfolio of evidence of your competence to perform a range of clinical tasks.
You will need the support of your employer to be able to complete this portfolio effectively.
The course will consist of topics such as Dental Disease, Regional Anatomy, Dental Materials, Radiography as well as those related to each procedure you are likely to encounter in the workplace.

This apprenticeship provides the learners with a possible progression route in other areas. Such as:
- Advanced dental nursing training and sedation training
- Oral Health Education
- Dental radiography as well as other career pathways in terms of teaching, assessing, dental hygiene and dental practice management.
- General nursing
- Midwifery
