Course Description
Would you like a career in – Bricklaying or Plastering?
You know that you want to follow one of these two trades in Construction. Then this course is for you!
This is the all new all Wales qualification replacing Bricklaying Level 1 and Plastering Level 1 in Dolgellau. You will study two trades: Bricklaying and Plastering.
This programme introduces you to the fundamental techniques of plastering and bricklaying, preparing you for working in these trades. The course will provide you with a background knowledge of other construction careers and professions; it will give you the practical skills to carry out a variety of bricklaying and plastering tasks, and will give you the basic theory of the type of work a bricklayer and a plasterer carries out along with knowledge of different bricklaying and plastering systems.
The Foundation qualification has common units and themes found in other Foundation in Construction pathways; the aim is to broaden the wider knowledge of how the construction industry operates and better equip learners for employment in the construction sector.
The programme is suitable for a variety of people looking to work in construction. This includes students progressing from school, or individuals from other sectors looking for a change of career. You will gain the practical knowledge you need to proceed onto a Construction Progression Qualification (Level 2) or into the industry through gaining an Apprenticeship.
Entry Criteria
In order to access this course, you will need at least one of the following:
4 GCSEs at grade G or above
successful completion of the Pathway to Construction Skills Qualification with a minimum of 85% attendance and a good report from your tutor
relevant Level 1 qualification,
relevant industry work experience, or relevant employment.
If you are progressing from the Pathway to Construction Skills course you will need to have completed both Application of Number and Communications ESWs at Entry 3 minimum or show evidence of improvement.
As part of the application process, you will be asked to attend an interview to give you the opportunity to discuss the course.
Delivery
You will study a variety of subject-specific modules, in addition to Literacy and Numeracy skills.
The programme is delivered through a blend of the following:
Practical sessions with excellent workshop facilities
Training in a realistic work environment (RWE)
Theory lessons in well-equipped classrooms
Discussions
Demonstrations
1 : 1 and group tutorial sessions
Your programme will include a combination of:
- Essential Skills qualifications and/or
- GCSE resits
Essential Skills
This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills
GCSE resits
This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.
Maths & Welsh/English
If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.
Assessment
This programme is assessed through the following:
Synoptic end of course test.
Online Multi-choice theory exam.
Guided discussion
Progression
The programme gives you a qualification and a valuable set of skills helping you to progress into employment through an Apprenticeship or further education with the Construction Progression Qualification.

Construction Progression Qualification
The Progression programme allows learners to focus on one specific trade. The best option would be to progress on to either of the following:
Level 2 Progression Plastering
Level 2 Progression Bricklaying
Apprenticeship in Construction
- Apprenticeship Level 3 in Brickwork
- Apprenticeship Level 3 in Plastering
(note, that apprenticeships in construction require learners to complete the Foundation in Construction Qualification, learners who have completed this qualification while attending a full time construction course at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai are exempt from the Foundation Qualification during an apprenticeship)
The Progression Qualification pathway can be different from the trade taken during the Foundation in Construction Qualification.
