3 days a week for 16/17 weeks.
For Gwynedd and Anglesey:
Students will attend 3 days a week from 9.30am – 3pm.Learners complete course work for the first 14 weeks of the course and a short work placement in a local school for the final 3 weeks of the course.
For Conwy and Denbighshire:
Learners attend college for either 1 or 2 days, and a work placement in a school for 1 day a week.

Course Description
For those who want to start a learning pathway to becoming a Teaching Assistant.
Gwynedd and Môn
The learning programme includes:
- An awareness of Safeguarding for children and young people
- Supporting children with reading skills including creating a story sack
- Supporting children with maths and creating maths trails/games
- Welsh Culture; the Traditions and Customs of Wales
- Employability skills such as: writing a tailored CV for the sector, planning career options and professional interview techniques
- Encouraging Children and Young People to eat Healthily
- Building confidence to use the Welsh language
- Creating lesson resources and wall displays using ICT
- Planning crafts activities for the classroom
Conwy and Denbighshire
The learning programme includes:
The course helps students develop the skills needed to work in a primary classroom. At Colwyn Bay Library learners will spend 2 days per week learning in a classroom, and 1 additional day per week of work experience. In Rhyl Library, learners will spend 1 day per week learning in a classroom, and 1 additional day per week of work experience. In Holyhead and Caernarfon the work experience takes place at the end of the course.
Tutors will help students arrange their placements. Hours are child-friendly, totalling less than 16/17 hours per week.
Entry Criteria
Learners will need to attend an informal interview before starting the course.
Learners will need to have a good standard of written English/Welsh .
The course is free, but students must complete a DBS check with the College which (currently) costs £49.50. There is a means tested student support fund for those eligible to help pay for the costs of the DBS however, funds are limited.

Accreditation on successful completion of a portfolio evidence that is generated throughout the course.
This course is an introduction to the subject and to build confidence and skills - it will not give you a teaching assistant qualification. On successful completion of the course, you will be able to progress to the Level 2 Diplomas available - please see ‘Progression’

Progression
Gwynedd and Môn
- Level 2 Diploma Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (STLS) with the college’s work-based learning department. Depending on extending the work placement at the end of the initial 3 weeks. Learners will need to secure a minimum of 16 hours across 12 months.
- Level 2 Diploma Childcare, Play, Learning and Development (CPLD) for learners who are interested in working in the early years.
Conwy and Denbighshire
- CACHE Classroom Assistants Level 2 (Certificate for Supporting Teaching and Learning in School)
