    Course Description

    This course aims to provide the knowledge and skills require to operate a 360° Excavator over 10 tonnes. It is suitable for operators of all abilities and those who have received no previous formal training or instruction.

    At the end of the course all learners should be able to:

    • Identify and explain the purpose of the principal components, basic construction, controls and terminology.
    • Conform to manufacture’s requirements as per handbook.
    • Undertake all machine pre use checks
    • Configure and get the machine ready for site and road travel.
    • Travel over rough ground, undulating ground, steep inclines and level surfaces.
    • Manoeuvre in confined spaces.
    • Configure and set up the machine for excavating duties
    • Explain the actions required for different hazards, underground and over ground services.
    • Excavate different types of excavations in a variety of ground types.
    • Place materials into transporting machines and hoppers.
    • Grade, spread and level ground and materials.
    • Attach and remove buckets
    • Lift, move and place basic slung loads with the rear boom.
    • Carry out shut down and securing procedures
    • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

    Entry Criteria

    All learners

    • An in date CITB Health, Safety and Environment touchscreen test.
    • A good understanding of Welsh and/or English is required.

    Novice Learners

    • No experience required

    Experienced/ Refresher

    • Either 18 months provable work experience and/ or 6 months consistent daily experience in this category

    Delivery

    Learning through a mix of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises

    Assessment

    9 days learning through a mix of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises

    1 day assessment – NPORS technical tests

    Progression

    After completing this course, the learner will be awarded a NPORS/ CSCS Card Red Trained Operatives card. This is valid for 2 years and learners will be required to register for a relevant NVQ.

    Upon the successful completion of the NVQ, learners will be awarded a Blue Competent Operators card. This is valid for 5 years. An operator logbook/ CPD record is also issued which will can be used to support refresher and experienced training.

    Refresher training is advised every 3 years.
