Course Description

This course provides you with the introductory skills and technical knowledge to prepare you for work in a variety of aeronautical engineering roles, in both the Aircraft Service and Maintenance industries.

The technical training is provided in the college full time over two years, including placement time in practical engineering workshops and industrial placements.

The course is a mix of theory and practical (70/30), work-related and you will learn by completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations. The qualification is valued by both employers and universities and will prepare you for both work related and educational progression to Higher Education. This course delivers industry-recognised qualifications designed to cover the fundamental skills and knowledge common to all engineering practices. If you are keen to become an Aeronautical Engineer and have the relevant entry requirements then this course is for you.

At the end of year 1 you will achieve a BTEC Foundation Diploma (1.5 A Levels) in Engineering and a NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations. You will also be required to complete 150 hours of Industry Work Experience, normally set as day release during the year.

At the end of year 2, you could achieve a BTEC Extended Diploma (3 x A Levels) in Aeronautical Engineering.

Entry Criteria

In order to qualify for this course you will need at least one of the following:

  • 5 GCSEs A*- C including 1st Language English or Welsh and Mathematics or Numeracy and a Science subject. Preferably a Grade B in Mathematics (Higher Tier)
  • Successfully completed Engineering Level 2

As part of the application process you will be asked to attend an interview.

Welsh Baccalaureate

Welsh Baccalaureate is a valuable qualification which is often studied alongside your Level 3 full-time course.

The qualification is graded A*-E, carrying the equivalent UCAS points at Level 3, and equips you with transferable personal and business skills. It is highly regarded by universities and employers alike.

As part of the qualification, you will learn about Global Citizenship, Enterprise and Employability and take part in community engagement and work experience.

Essential Skills

This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills

GCSE resits

This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.

Maths & Welsh/English

If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.
