Course Description
Would you like a career with animals? Would you like to develop your skills at an advanced level?
This course builds on your existing knowledge of animal care, preparing you to operate at a management level whilst also understanding the theoretical and practical aspects of handling and caring for animals. It also provides a vocational route into Higher Education.
The course is suitable for students progressing from Animal Care Level 2, or a Level 2 Work-based course. It is also ideal if you are proceeding from GCSE achievements, or from relevant experience.
Through theory and practical training sessions, you will gain the necessary experience for a variety of animal management jobs. You will benefit from the excellent facilities of our Glynllifon campus, including the range of species housed in our animal centre.
Entry Criteria
Diploma in Animal Management
In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:
- 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths
- A relevant Level 2 qualification at Merit
- Relevant industry experience
Extended Diploma in Animal Management (Year 2)
- Pass or above in Diploma in Animal Management
As part of the application process, you will be asked to attend an interview to give you the opportunity to discuss the course.
Delivery
The programme will be delivered through a blend of Theory-based classroom sessions linked to practical sessions to develop hands-on experience and deepen understanding.
The Coleg Glynllifon site is 750 acres of farm and woodland, with its own animal centre containing up to 50 species. There are 2 exotics facilities, a variety of small animal housing, dog grooming room, outside paddocks, farm livestock and access to our managed forest for wildlife practicals. The facilities allow your studies to be carried out in a realistic setting.

- Essential Skills qualifications and/or
- GCSE resits and/or
- The Welsh Baccalaureate
Welsh Baccalaureate
Welsh Baccalaureate is a valuable qualification which is often studied alongside your Level 3 full-time course.
The qualification is graded A*-E, carrying the equivalent UCAS points at Level 3, and equips you with transferable personal and business skills. It is highly regarded by universities and employers alike.
As part of the qualification, you will learn about Global Citizenship, Enterprise and Employability and take part in community engagement and work experience.
Essential Skills
This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills
GCSE resits
This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.
Maths & Welsh/English
If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.
Assessment
The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:
- Portfolio assignments to show your understanding
- Practical assessment
- External Examination
- A Synoptic assessment bringing together theory and practice.
Progression
Successful completion of the Diploma course in Year 1 is required for progression to the Extended Diploma in Year 2.
Successful completion of the courses will give you a range of options.
The qualification is equivalent to 3 A Levels, and many students have progressed into Higher Education to study HNDs, Foundation degrees or Honours degrees. You could also study the Veterinary Nursing Level 3 course at Glynllifon.
You would also have the option of studying a Higher Education course whilst you work.
Campus Information Glynllifon
There is a requirement for all students to use appropriate PPE for practical activities to comply with risk assessments. You will be informed of what PPE is required before starting the course. Some PPE will be available to purchase through the college.
