Course Description

This framework provides a nationally agreed apprenticeship framework for a work-based learning route into employment for the barbering industry, using qualifications that combine both skills and knowledge.

Barbering has a unique position within the hair and beauty sector, as it combines traditional skills such as gentlemen’s cutting with new specialist techniques such as skin fading, creating lines and patterns, colouring and perming.

Entry Criteria

  • No formal qualifications are required
  • You must have an employer that can cover the NVQ criteria or we can support you in finding an employer
  • You must be enthusiastic, committed and willing to learn
  • You must have a calm and caring personality
  • You will be required to attend an interview

All places are subject to satisfactory interview.

Delivery

The majority of the course is delivered in the workplace. However, Work-Based Learners will benefit from a blend of the following:

  • Real salon environments at the college
  • Commercial sessions
  • Demonstrations
  • Role play exercises
  • Group work

Attendance at college-based sessions to complete theory tasks and tests is not essential. It is possible to complete the qualification through open distance learning. You will have to attend Essential Skills Qualifications sessions at a convenient college site, if required.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Electronic Portfolio of practical assessments for each unit Assignments and tasks
  • Multiple-choice tests covering the underpinning knowledge (Online Exams) Theory based tasks and tests
  • Work-Based Observations and Assessments
  • Your behaviour will also count towards your assessment, in terms of maturity, development, interaction and communication

Progression

The course gives you a valuable qualification and brings your barbering skills up to an advanced level.


Campus Information Work-Based Learning

Aimed at those who would like to pursue a career in the exciting, fashion- orientated world of Hairdressing.

This is a practical course to enable you to become a stylist. You will study all aspects of Ladies' and Mens' hairstyling including cutting, perming, colouring, setting, blow-drying, long hair, hair/scalp treatments, client consultation, reception, and health and safety. The course will provide you with the knowledge to pursue a career in Hairdressing.

Unit Information

Candidates must complete 7 mandatory units totaling 44 credits and optional units to a minimum of 9 credits to give an overall total of 53 credits to achieve the full qualification.

MANDATORY UNITS

  • Cut men's hair using basic techniques - 12 credits (7 Competence 5 Knowledge)
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques - 5 credits (2 Competence 3 Knowledge)
  • Dry and finish men’s hair - 5 credits (3 Competence 2 Knowledge)
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair - 6 credits (2 Competence 4 Knowledge)
  • Advise and consult with clients - 8 credits (3 Competence 5 Knowledge)
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp - 5 credits (3 Competence 2 Knowledge)
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work - 3 credits (2 Competence 1 Knowledge)

OPTIONAL UNITS

  • Relax hair - 9 credits (4 Competence 5 Knowledge)
  • Assist with shaving services - 5 credits (2 Competence 3 Knowledge)
  • Colour and lighten men's hair - 14 credits (6 Competence 8 Knowledge)
  • Perm and neutralise hair - 10 credits (5 Competence 5 Knowledge)
  • Plait and twist hair - 5 credits (2 Competence 2 Knowledge)
  • Temporarily attach hair to enhance a style - 3 credits (2 Competence 1 Knowledge)
  • Fulfill salon reception duties - 6 credits (4 Competence 2 Knowledge)
