Course Description

This framework provides a nationally agreed apprenticeship framework for a work-based learning route into employment for the beauty industry, using qualifications that combine both skills and knowledge.

Are you currently working in beauty therapy? Are you looking to develop your career and your technical skills? This apprenticeship course helps you to progress into top beauty jobs, including managerial roles, work as a demonstrator, positions in leading spas and jobs on cruise liners. It is also one of the only acceptable qualifications for work abroad, giving you even more options for success. The course is suitable for students progressing from a relevant Level 2 qualification, or from existing professional knowledge and short accredited courses that you may already have completed.

Careers may take place in a variety of locations including beauty salons, spas and health clubs, holiday resorts or working freelance.

Entry Criteria

You should have a Level 2 Beauty Therapy qualification, or equivalent professional knowledge / skills
Apprentices must have an employer who can cover the NVQ criteria or we can support you in finding an employer
You must be enthusiastic, committed and willing to learn
You must have a calm and caring personality
You will be required to attend an interview

All places are subject to satisfactory interviews.

Delivery

The majority of the course is delivered in the workplace. However, Work-Based Learners will benefit from a blend of the following:

Theory sessions
Practical workshops
Commercial sessions
Demonstrations

The beauty therapy courses do not attend college for practical and theory workshops. All technical training will need to be provided by the salon. There will be opportunities to undertake training in the college salon as well as bring in clients when needed. An Assessor will complete all assessments and theory within the workplace.

You will have to attend Essential Skills Qualifications sessions at a convenient college site, if required.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a blend of the following:

Completion of Electronic Portfolio of practical assessments for each unit Assignments and tasks
Multiple-choice tests covering the underpinning knowledge (Online Exams) Theory based tasks and tests
Work-Based Observations and Assessments
Your behavior will also count towards your assessment, in terms of maturity, development, interaction and communication

Progression

The Level 3 qualification will help you progress in the right direction towards a challenging career. You will be able to seek additional responsibilities in your workplace, and may be able to work in a supervisory or managerial role. You will have a range of options for working as a beauty therapist, in workplaces across the UK and in other countries. If you want to advance further in education, you may have the option of proceeding into Higher Education on either a full-time or part-time basis. You could undertake a City and Guilds Higher Professional qualification at Grwp Llandrillo Menai, which would enhance your skills and employability even further and give you a qualification at Level 4 or above.

To the Level 4 Beauty Therapy apprenticeship program or Higher Education Qualifications.
Progression will be based on meeting clientele requirements for the higher level.
Progression may also be available to other related routes such as Nail Services or Hairdressing.

Campus Information Work-Based Learning

A practical course aimed at those who would like to pursue a career in Beauty Therapy. The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy Massage will allow the junior beauty therapist to advance their skills and specialize in all areas of massage.

Unit Information

Beauty Therapy (Massage Route)

A Beauty Therapist would be trained to carry out treatments including body massage treatments, stone therapy, Indian head massage, aromatherapy massage, body electrical treatments and waxing services. Additional units can also be added on to this route from the list below

To achieve this qualification candidates must complete 6 mandatory units totaling 44 credits and optional units to a minimum of 7 credits in order to give an overall total of 51 credits.

MANDATORY UNITS

Monitor procedures to safely control work operations - 4 credits (1 Competence 3 Knowledge)
Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities - 5 credits (2 Competence 3 Knowledge)
Provide body massage treatments - 10 credits (5 Competence 5 Knowledge)
Provide Indian Head massage - 7 credits (4 Competence 3 Knowledge)
Carry out massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils - 8 credits (5 Competence 3 Knowledge)
Provide stone therapy treatments - 10 credits (6 Competence 4 Knowledge)

OPTIONAL UNITS

Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business - 4 credits (1 Competence 3 Knowledge)
Plan and provide airbrush make-up - 8 credits (5 Competence 3 Knowledge)
Provide body electrical treatments - 12 credits (7 Competence 5 Knowledge)
Provide facial electrical treatments - 12 credits (7 Competence 5 Knowledge)
Provide single eyelash extension treatments - 5 credits (3 Competence 2 Knowledge)
Provide UV tanning services - 2 credits (1 Competence 1 Knowledge)
Provide self-tanning services - 3 credits (2 Competence 1 Knowledge)
Provide female intimate waxing services - 5 credits (3 Competence 2 Knowledge)
Provide male intimate waxing services - 5 credits (3 Competence 2 Knowledge)
