Course Description

This qualification is for support workers in Primary Care (General Practice) settings in Wales, providing support to individuals accessing General Practitioner (GP) Services under the direction of a professionally registered practitioner, such as a GP, or registered nurse. It provides a core qualification that recognises roles currently undertaken support workers working with individuals within General Practice.

To undertake this qualification, learners must be employed by GPs in roles where clinical skills are central to their role. The qualification was developed to provide better governance of practice in Wales through external quality assurance for this developing and expanding role.

It is the preferred qualification for NHS Wales, and it is expected that all GP based support workers will have the opportunity to complete the qualification and/or to achieve elements of it for continuing professional development to support changes in practice over time.

Entry Criteria

Learners must be at least 18 years of age to achieve this qualification.They must

  • be employed in roles where clinical skills are either all or a significant part of their work .
  • GCSE’s grades C or above (or equivalent grades) in English / Welsh, Maths and I.T. Learners without these grades may be required to upskill first and will need to complete Level 2 essential skills qualifications in Communication, Application of Number and Digital Literacy.
  • Learners must receive supervision from a Professionally Registered Practitioner(s), who can assess their progress.
  • They will have met the sector's minimum standards for induction into the job role, some of which may provide evidence against this qualification through the recognition of prior learning.

Delivery

This qualification is carried out through work-based learning and is delivered on a one to one basis.

Assessment

The learner must successfully complete a portfolio of evidence that includes direct observation of practice

Progression

Learners achieving this qualification are qualified to practise in Primary Care (General Practice) roles at skills level 3.

The qualification has been developed to provide an entry point to Level 4 / Band 4 / assistant practitioner education and training.
