Course Description

The food and drink manufacturing industry is an exciting, dynamic, fast-paced and competitive industry driven by innovation and new technology, suitable for people of all abilities and backgrounds.

Operations in food or drink manufacturing and processing are wide ranging and typically include the production of snack foods, convenience ready meals, confectionery and chocolate, baked goods, sandwiches, fresh and prepared produce, beverages and alcoholic drinks, amongst many other types of product.

The Level 2 qualification is designed primarily for learners who wish to develop intermediate skills and knowledge in food and drink manufacturing/processing operations and covers a variety of subject areas including food preparation and processing, food science and technology and food safety and quality.

The Level 3 qualification is designed for learners who wish to develop advanced occupational skills and knowledge in a wide range of supervisory and monitoring skills in food processing and to confirm occupational competence in roles such as Food processing controller/technician , Food quality assurance controller/supervisor or Process improvement lead operative, amongst others .

Entry Criteria

  • No formal qualifications are required, but experience in food and drink manufacturing is desirable.
  • Apprentices must have an employer who can cover the NVQ criteria.

Delivery

  • The majority of training is provided in the workplace

Assessment

  • Completion of a portfolio of evidence
  • Work-based observations
  • Theory-based tasks and tests

Progression

  • From Foundation Apprenticeship Level 2 to an Apprenticeship Level 3
