Course Description
Are you working as a stylist, or are you about to start your career in hairdressing? Would you like to enhance your knowledge and technical skills? This apprenticeship course enables you to gain a valuable Level 2 qualification whilst you work. It builds on your existing understanding and helps you to excel as a stylist.
The course covers all aspects of ladies' hairstyling, training you to a high standard in cutting, perming, colouring, colour weaving techniques, blow-drying, hair-up and setting, as well hair/scalp treatments. In addition, you can acquire knowledge and skills in reception, health and safety and retailing.
Entry Criteria
- No formal qualifications are required but experience in Hair and Beauty is desirable or prior completion of the NVQ Level 1
- You must have an employer that can cover the NVQ criteria or we can support you in finding an employer
- You must be enthusiastic, committed and willing to learn
- You must have a calm and caring personality
- You will be required to attend an interview
All places are subject to satisfactory interview.
Delivery
The majority of the course is delivered in the workplace. However, Work-Based Learners will benefit from a blend of the following:
- Theory classes
- Practical workshops
- Real salon environments at the college
- Commercial sessions
- Demonstrations
- Role play exercises
- Group work
Attendance at college-based sessions to complete theory tasks and tests is not essential. It is possible to complete the qualification through open distance learning. You will have to attend Essential Skills Qualifications sessions at a convenient college site, if required.
Assessment
The course is assessed through a blend of the following:
- Electronic Portfolio of practical assessments for each unit Assignments and tasks
- Multiple-choice tests covering the underpinning knowledge (Online Exams) Theory based tasks and tests
- Work-Based Observations and Assessments
- Your behaviour will also count towards your assessment, in terms of maturity, development, interaction and communication
Progression
The course gives you a valuable qualification and brings your hairdressing skills up to an advanced level. You will have the ability to excel, and will be able to progress from a junior position into a full stylist role.
You will also be prepared for further study at a more advanced level. You could continue to study part-time and progress onto the NVQ 3 Hairdressing Apprenticeship course, which is also offered at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai.
Progression will be based on meeting clientele requirements for the higher level. Progression may also be available to other Barbering and Beauty Therapy Pathways.
Campus Information Work-Based Learning
Aimed at those who would like to pursue a career in the exciting, fashion- orientated world of Hairdressing.
This is a practical course to enable you to become a stylist. You will study all aspects of Ladies' and Mens' hairstyling including cutting, perming, colouring, setting, blow-drying, long hair, hair/scalp treatments, client consultation, reception, and health and safety. The course will provide you with the knowledge to pursue a career in Hairdressing.
Unit Information
To achieve the full qualification candidates must complete 7 mandatory units totaling 55 credits and optional units to a minimum of 9 credits in order to give an overall total of 64 credits.
MANDATORY UNITS
- Style and Finish Hair 6 Credits (knowledge 3 competence 3)
- Set and dress hair 7 Credits (knowledge 4 competence 3)
- Cut hair using basic techniques 12 Credits (knowledge 5 competence 7)
- Colour and lighten hair 14 Credits (knowledge 9 competence 5)
- Advise and consult with clients 8 Credits (knowledge 5 competence 3)
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp 5 Credits (knowledge 2 competence 3)
- Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work 3 Credits (knowledge 1 competence 2)
OPTIONAL UNITS
- Relax hair 9 Credits (Knowledge 5 competence 4)
- Perm and neutralise hair 10 Credits (knowledge 5 competence 5)
- Plait and twist hair 5 Credits (knowledge 3 competence 2)
- Temporarily attach hair to enhance a style 3 Credits (knowledge 1 competence 2)
- Remove hair extensions 5 Credits (knowledge 2 competence 3)
- Fulfill salon reception duties 6 Credits (knowledge 2 competence 4)
- Cut men’s hair using basic techniques 12 Credits (knowledge 5 competence 7)
- Cut men’s hairstyles 6 Credits (knowledge 2 competence 4)
