Course Description

Would you like to develop your mathematic skills at an advanced level?

The course can be taken as part of a full-time programme of study in conjunction with other AS subjects, or possibly with other Level 3 qualifications. Further Maths is particularly advantageous for any student with a genuine interest in enhancing their knowledge of the subject, or wishing to carry on with the subject at a Higher Level.

Unit Information

The course covers many aspects of mathematics, and is designed to develop both a broad and in-depth understanding of the subject, as well as enjoyment and achievement. The emphasis on mathematical modelling and context means that you will be able to recognise and use mathematics in numerous aspects of daily life.

The Further Pure module introduces topics such as Matrices, Mathematical Induction, and Complex Numbers, which involves the concept of an imaginary number. These are all fascinating ideas that students may not have realised existed, and would take great enjoyment in studying.

Year 1

AS - Unit 1 (33⅓% of AS)

Constructing proofs using Mathematical Induction, working with Complex numbers to solve polynomials with imaginary roots, understanding how to find the modulus and argument of a complex number and interpreting the argand diagram, Matrix Algebra, Matrix transformations, relationship between roots and coefficients of a polynomial, summation of a number series, and further Vectors.

AS - Unit 2 (33⅓% of AS)

Statistics - Understand and use the mean and Variance of linear combinations of independent random variables, find the mean and variance of discrete probability distributions, understand and use continuous probability distributions, Poisson and Exponential distribution, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and the Chi Squared Distribution.

AS - Unit 3 (33⅓% of AS)

Momentum and Impulse, Hooke’s Law, Work, Energy, Power, Circular motion, in a horizontal and vertical context, differentiation and Integration of vectors.

Entry Criteria

In order to qualify for this course, you will need the following:

6 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English or Welsh 1st Language
GCSE Mathematics grade A

As part of the application process, you will be asked to attend an interview to give you the opportunity to discuss the course.

Progression to A Level is based on your performance at AS Level.

Welsh Baccalaureate

Welsh Baccalaureate is a valuable qualification which is often studied alongside your Level 3 full-time course.

The qualification is graded A*-E, carrying the equivalent UCAS points at Level 3, and equips you with transferable personal and business skills. It is highly regarded by universities and employers alike.

As part of the qualification, you will learn about Global Citizenship, Enterprise and Employability and take part in community engagement and work experience.
