Course Description

This course is designed to attract anyone who has a desire to develop their performance skills. The students’ will become skilled in performing for the stage and other mediums. This intensive 1 year course (for F/T) will cover all aspects of the acting industry to give them a start to a performer’s CV, that they could then use to progress onto other HE courses or the industry. Students will become equipped with the knowledge and skills to self promote in order to gain employment as well as having the opportunity throughout the course to develop their audition techniques.

The Programme aims to:

  • Develop performance skills in acting, movement and voice
  • Prepare students for auditions for drama schools, further HE courses or industry
  • Assist students to create their own online platform to promote their work
  • Develop students skills to plan, rehearse and perform their own performance

The distinctive features of the Programme aim to include:

  • One year intensive drama school/ HE or industry preparation course

  • Visits to theatres and TV studios

Additional costs

Additional costs may be associated with the following:

  • There is potential to visit at least two professional performances per academic year, therefore the cost of the theatre ticket is to be paid by the student.
  • Professional clothing is to be worn in all sessions, black t-shirts and jogging bottoms, along with jazz shoes/trainers will be required.
  • Consider budgeting for external trips that will cost approximately £200.

Academic Requirements

  • a minimum of 72 UCAS tariff points in a main level 3 qualification, usually gaining a pass in at least one relevant subject which could include: A Levels, UAL Extended Diploma, BTEC, International Baccalaureate, ACCESS to HE; or NVQ Level 3; many additional qualifications from Wales, England and Scotland are accepted to support the UCAS points in addition to the relevant subject, such as the Welsh Baccalaureate.
  • GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy, grade C/4 or above, or Key/Essential Skill equivalent level. For applicants without these qualifications, evidence of numeracy skills at a suitable level to meet the demands of the programme successfully, will need to be demonstrated.
  • Equivalent international qualifications are acceptable

OR

Successful audition and workshop could be used to gain entry onto the course in lieu of academic achievement.

Language Requirements

  • GCSE, or equivalent, in Welsh or English as first language, grade C/4 or above
  • Any degrees, diplomas or certificates eligible should have been taught and assessed in Welsh or English, or
  • For overseas applicants, for entry onto Level 4, English fluency to IELTS 5.5 or higher (with no element less than 5.0)

Delivery

This course is delivered through a blend of the following:

The scheduled learning and guided activities will be delivered through face to face delivery with a series of blended (face to face and online web-based learning activities), interactive lectures, seminars, workshops, guest speakers, , individual and group activities, The course will be delivered by Acting, Movement , Technical and Voice specialists with professional industry experience and subject knowledge that reflects the changing and contemporary landscape of performance works.

The programme is specific to develop acting and drama approaches therefore students will look at a variety of specific practitioners over the programme, using this within a number of the modules. Students will have the opportunity to work in a purpose built theatre and smaller black box studio. They will work closely with industry professionals and utilise venues such as Theatr Clwyd, Aria studios and Pontio.

Work experience:

As part of the certificate for higher education students will undertake a minimum of 75 hours of work experience or placement as part of the programme at level 4, within a relevant vocational sector. This will be assessed through the development of a log reflecting on any work experience undertaken throughout the course contributing the 75 hours.

Additional costs may be associated with the following:

  • There is the opportunity for students to visit at least two theatre performances per academic year, this cost will be covered by the student. They could also be part of the annual departmental trip to London.
  • Professional clothing to be worn to sessions, black top and bottoms along with appropriate footwear. Most highstreet clothing suppliers will be useful, although participants may wish to use dance wear suppliers.
  • Budget approximately £300 to support the cost of potential trips.

Feedback

Where relevant, assessments will be marked and returned to students with constructive and developmental feedback. Effective feedback combines information which enables students to understand the strengths and limitations of their past performance, and information which enables them to recognise how future performance can be improved. Students will be provided with feedback in a timely manner and this feedback will justify how the grade has been awarded. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on the feedback given and identify their strengths, things they found challenging and areas for development that they will feed forward to their next assessment. Feedback will include linking evidence to assessment criteria to demonstrate how the student will have met the learning outcomes.

Progression

This course will provide a strong foundation in Acting and enable you to feel fully prepared to audition for a progression route to an accredited drama school or degree-level study at university, an apprenticeship or directly into industry.

Campus Information Rhos-on-Sea

For every 10 credits, students should engage with around 100 notional hours of learning. This will be approximately 30% direct learning contact and 70% independent student learning.

Year 1 (Level 4)

Professional Showcase (20 credits, compulsory)

This module will explore student’s readiness for the industry, within the module a series of works will be developed that would be suitable to present in a showcase to potential agents, employers and industry professionals. Preparation and planning for the event will be carried out as a team, in an external venue of the group’s choosing. (Portfolio of Planning(45%) / Practical Rehearsal and Showcase(45%) / Evaluation(10%) / Work Experience (Pass/Fail))

Current Affairs (20 credits, core)

The entertainment industry is ever evolving to meet the vast socio-economic themes of our society. It is imperative to consider current social, political, environmental, cultural and technological (SPECT) issues that are pertinent to our industry. In this module students will carry out an investigation into a theme of their choosing that has an impact on the industry. (Website(60%) / Viva Voce(40%))

Performer’s Techniques - Acting (10 credits, compulsory)

You will be studying the fundamentals of actor training. You will be working on audition materials ready for your Conservatoire, industry or university auditions. You will be studying acting techniques in conjunction with studying practitioners such as Constantin Stanislavski, Uta Hagen. (Performance and rehearsal video (60%) /
Presentation of Performance Production Folder (40%))

Performer’s Technique-Movement (10 credits, compulsory)

You will be studying the fundamentals and origins of movement, in particular styles such as Jazz where you will be researching a variety of global practitioners, other styles studied could be physical theatre and stage combat. You will understand the importance of fitness and stamina through a thorough warm up routine. You will be developing the fundamentals of basic technique in addition to integrating the movement technique into routines and combinations which will be used for showcases throughout the year. (Recorded Practical; Assessment Class (50%) / Production Folder including reflection(50%))

Performing For Media (20 credits, compulsory)

This is an opportunity to develop your performance skills in front of the Camera. You will participate in workshops culminating in the production of a TV drama. You will also study how to perform for radio or online platforms (TV Drama Footage (60%) / Evaluation and Research Portfolio(40%))

Multi- Camera and Television Production (10 credits, compulsory)

This module will enable the student to develop knowledge and skills in multi-camera operations and productions, to work to plan and produce a multi-camera production to a specified brief. This module will cover practical aspects of a studio based production, developing on the knowledge and understanding of various video and AV-IP based protocols, industry terminology and practices. (Pre-Production Folder Portfolio (50%) / Multi-Camera Production (50%))

Professional Profile (10 credits, compulsory)

In this module students will gain a greater awareness of the personnel within the industry. This, in association with understanding how to gain employment including a show reel and an online profile will support potential future employment. Work in this industry is competitive and can challenge people’s well-being; developing techniques and how to maintain a positive mental approach is paramount. (Essay on Job Roles (60%) / Portfolio of Evidence (40%))
