Course Description
Would you like a career supporting the wellbeing and development of children and young people?
Are you looking to develop practical skills in children’s care, learning, play and development? The programme is an ideal preparation for a range of careers, in schools, nurseries, healthcare and other environments, and underpins progression to further study.
This programme of learning is for all those who wish to work in the Children and Young People's Workforce in Wales. This Level 2 Children’s Core qualification has been designed for post-16 students in Wales, working or seeking to work in regulated childcare settings with families and children under the age of 8, NHS children’s services for those working with families and children 0-19 (this includes child health settings). It will explore a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas for example, NHS, Youth Work and Early Years settings. You will focus on developing your understanding of relevant topics such as children’s learning and development, play, safeguarding, care and equality – taught by staff who are industry professionals.
A substantial period of time is spent in work placement which allows the course to meet National Occupational Standards of the sector at Level 2.
Entry Criteria
4 GCSEs at grade A* to D. These must include English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths or Numeracy. Alternatively, an appropriate Level 1 Diploma qualification in the relevant vocational area, at MM, with demonstratable progress within Maths and English/Welsh (GCSE equivalent accepted). Enhanced DBS check to be completed upon enrolment.

As part of this course you will need to pay £49.50 for a DBS check, and around £100 for uniform and trips.

Maths & Welsh/English
If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.
Assessment
The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:
- Practical and written assessments/assignments
- Presentations and demonstrations
- Portfolios of work
- Performance and observation
- Online Multiple Choice Exam (Children's core)
You will also continue to develop a number of skills, including numeracy, literacy and digital skills, as part of the course.
The Level 2 CPLD Practice and Theory qualification is assessed through 40 days (280 hours) of work placement in an early years setting which must be undertaken between September and June while you are studying with us. We schedule this into your planned timetable. The theory part of your programme is assessed through 90% internal and 10 % external assessment. You must successfully complete both the placement and theory parts to fully achieve the qualification.
Progression
Successfully completing this course will give you the national qualifications required to register with the sector workforce. This will improve your employability and give you important knowledge and skills. You could apply for a Level 3 programme, or one of our work-based courses in childcare or health and social care which will further qualify you with the practice element for a career in children’s play, learning and development. You could also use your skills to go into employment.
