Course Description
The Higher-Level Apprenticeship in Construction/Civil Engineering Site Supervision (Construction) – Level 4 (HNC) has been developed to meet the need of the following sectors, Building and Civil Engineering, Highways and Maintenance Repairs, Residential Development, Conservation, Demolition and Tunnelling. This broad range of occupational areas is designed to assess occupational competence in the workplace and demonstrate knowledge and understanding through the technical certificate, for candidates with appropriate prior experience of work in the sectors identified.
The Higher Level 4 Apprenticeship will address the following:
- Provide progression from Occupational Work Supervision
- Provide progression onto Level 5 and above
- Allow entry into degree programmes
- Assist retention and provide a pathway for experienced workers
- Improving supervisory, management and leadership skills
This technical certificate is delivered on college grounds one day a week, alongside guidance and review sessions for the collection of work-based evidence required to complete the NVQ.
This evidence is submitted to an online platform enabling constant access to the portfolio and a holistic way of managing the criteria. Individual learning plans provide clear direction for each apprentice in regards to their progress with regular reviews providing employers the opportunity to monitor their investment.
Entry Criteria
Essential: Candidates must have at least two years of experience in the industry and currently hold a supervisory position to qualify for this pathway.
GCSE in English/Welsh language or literature to at least grade C, or equivalent Essential Skills
GCSE in Mathematics to at least grade C, or equivalent Essential Skills
Other suitable qualifications such as
A/AS Level qualification in English/Welsh or literature to at least grade D
A/AS Level qualification in Mathematics to at least grade D
Relevant industry Level 3 NVQ
Relevant industry Level 3 Apprenticeship

Assessment
The programme is assessed using the following methods:
- Assignments
- Practical tasks
- Presentations
- External Exam
- Internal Exam
- Completion of a work-based evidence portfolio
Progression
There will be a wide range of opportunities that apprentices can be involved with in a structured career path, such as Building, Civil Engineering and Specialist occupations.
Progression routes include NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations or NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management.
Alternatively, progression could be followed into Higher Education qualifications such as a Foundation Degree in Construction and the Built Environment, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Conservation and Restoration, Quantity Surveying, Architecture/Design, Architectural Technology or Building Surveying.
