Course Description

Are you looking to start a career in forestry, arboriculture or countryside and environment management? Would you like to develop your skills at an advanced level?

This course builds your knowledge of the sector, including aspects of wildlife, habitats, ecology, conservation, forest management and arboriculture. It prepares you to enter a range of careers, including those dealing with countryside organisations, their policy and planning, and their relationships to other bodies like Natural Resources Wales, RSPB, local councils, National Parks, National Trust, estate work, forestry contracting and tree surgery. It also provides a vocational route into Higher Education.

The course is suitable for students progressing from a related Level 2 course, from GCSE achievements, or from prior experience. The course reflects the sector's need for competent, well trained countryside/forest managers. It focuses on hands-on learning, with practical training sessions and work on the extensive Glynllifon estate. You will benefit from the excellent facilities of our campus and the expertise of our staff.

Entry Criteria

In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths
  • A relevant Level 2 qualification at Merit
  • Relevant industry experience

As part of the application process, you will be asked to attend an interview to give you the opportunity to discuss the course.

Delivery

The programme will be delivered through a blend of the following:

● Practically based to gain skills in countryside/forestry management techniques.

● Classroom work to develop understanding of management systems and their application.

● Bilingual delivery, with learning materials available in Welsh and English

The Glynllifon site is 750 acres of farm and woodlands. Practical sessions will make full use of these resources along with our modern tree harvesting and processing facilities.

  • GCSE resits and/or
  • The Welsh Baccalaureate
Welsh Baccalaureate

Welsh Baccalaureate is a valuable qualification which is often studied alongside your Level 3 full-time course.

The qualification is graded A*-E, carrying the equivalent UCAS points at Level 3, and equips you with transferable personal and business skills. It is highly regarded by universities and employers alike.

As part of the qualification, you will learn about Global Citizenship, Enterprise and Employability and take part in community engagement and work experience.

Essential Skills

This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills

GCSE resits

This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.

Maths & Welsh/English

If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.

Campus Information Glynllifon

The Glynllifon site is 750 acres of farm and woodlands, including dairy, sheep, beef, pigs and organic enterprises. You will be working with equipment and specialist forestry resources to gain skills and knowledge in a realistic setting.

The college also has a modern static sawmill which is used to process timber on site, to demonstrate processing and value added to timber.
