Course Description

Would you like a career in health and social care? This programme provides a foundation level qualification, delivered by experienced professionals. It aims to develop your knowledge and skills, preparing you to progress onto Advanced level study or into the health or social care sector. It provides a practical programme of study, focusing on the needs of real job roles and situations. The programme is suitable if you are progressing from a related Level 1 course or from suitable GCSE attainment.

After completing the programme, you will be able to work in a number of roles, including support and sessional work across the care sector. You will also be prepared for Advanced study, and eventual careers including nursing, social work and residential care.

Careers in this sector involve putting others before ourselves and using your skills to keep others safe and well. The qualification covers the fundamental knowledge and
understanding of the All Wales Induction Framework for Health and Social Care and reflects a range of different roles and settings.

The Level 2 Health and Social Care programme enables learners to develop knowledge and understanding:

● of the core principles and values which underpin Health and Social Care practice;
● of ways of working in the Health and Social Care sector;
● which informs effective practice within Health and Social Care;
● to support progression on to further study within Health and Social Care.

The content covers: The principles and values of health and social care; Health and well- being; Professional practice as a health and social care worker; Safeguarding individuals and Health and safety in health and social care. The qualification also supports opportunities for moving into employment. It should be noted that in addition to the core qualification a Practice qualification is also a requirement for practice and this can be achieved through further study at the next level, or through work based route upon completion of this course.

The programme you will follow will equip you to with practical skills and knowledge to support a diverse range of people, including vulnerable individuals. The course will also develop the skills you will need for successful study upon progression to higher level qualifications or if moving directly into work to further your career through practice. During the programme you will also build your understanding of the range of careers available within this sector.

Entry Criteria

4 GCSEs at grade A* to D. These must include English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths or Numeracy. Alternatively, an appropriate Level 1 Diploma qualification in the relevant vocational area, at MM, with demonstratable progress within Maths and English/Welsh (GCSE equivalent accepted). Enhanced DBS check to be completed upon enrolment.

Your programme may require you to attend an interview, please ensure you attend this.

As part of this course you will need to pay £49.50 for a DBS check, and around £100 for uniform and trips.

Delivery

The programme will consist of the All Wales Combined Health and Social Care Level 2, along with an appropriate individual programme (depending on your incoming qualifications) which includes Literacy, Numeracy, Employability, Digital Skills development. In addition all learners will have Group and individual tutorial and placement skills development.

The programme will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Group work
  • Classroom-based learning
  • Tutorial support
  • Educational visits
  • Sector guest speakers or events
  • Google Classroom Online learning environment.

Your programme will include a combination of:

  • Essential Skills qualifications and/or
  • GCSE resits
Essential Skills

This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills

GCSE resits

This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.

Maths & Welsh/English

If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.

Assessment

The vocational qualification is assessed through a combination of internal and external assessment.

Candidates must successfully complete:

  • Two internal assessments
  • One written exam, externally marked
  • Work placement & sector engagement

Progression

Completion of this course improves your employability and gives you important knowledge and skills. It will prepare you for a career in healthcare, social care or childcare.

Successful completion of the programme equips you to progress to Level 3 study within the Health and Social or Children’s Development sectors. Both these routes
allow you to gain the Practice element required for registration in the workplace, along with higher level qualifications in Health and Social / Child sector.

Alternatively you can move to a related sector at Level 3, such as the Uniformed Public Services. From all these Level 3 courses you are able to go to Higher Education (University).

Alternatively, you may want to move straight into employment to undertake the Level 2 Practice qualification through employment which (with this course) will allow you to register to work in the sector and progress your career through the workplace.
