Course Description
If you are looking for a career as a lorry or bus mechanic, or technician, and have already completed a Foundation in Engineering Level 1 course, then the Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 2 course is for you.
This Level 2 course helps you build on the technical skills and academic knowledge you learnt at Level 1. The course focuses on practical, hands-on learning, delivered in realistic workshops. It brings your abilities up to an industry level and prepares you for a career as a lorry mechanic or technician.
In addition to attending the course, it is recommended that you gain work experience in a local garage. Work experience is essential if you are to make the required progress in your vocational skills and progress to Level 3.
Entry Criteria
In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:
- Successful completion of the Foundation Engineering Level 1 or 2
- Gained 4 GCSE A*- C, including Maths/Numeracy & 1st language Welsh/English
As part of the application process, you may be asked to attend an interview with the opportunity to discuss the course in more detail.

- Lectures and ILT to develop underpinning knowledge
- Practical demonstrations
- Realistic working tasks
- Assignment work
- Online and remote learning
- Visits to Industry and Trade Shows

- Essential Skills qualifications and/or
- GCSE resits

This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills

This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.
Maths & Welsh/English
If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.
Assessment
The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:
- Internal practical assessment
- Online assessment
- Oral questioning
- Written questions
- Short learner task sheets for you to complete independently
Progression
Completion of this course will give you the fundamental skills and knowledge to progress on to one of the following:
- work as a lorry or bus mechanic or technician
- apply for an apprenticeship (Foundation Apprenticeship Level 2 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Heavy))
- apply for the Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 3
