Introduction to Being a Teaching Assistant

Course Description

The course helps students develop the skills needed to work in a primary classroom. At Colwyn Bay Library learners will spend 2 days per week learning in a classroom, and 1 additional day per week of work experience. In Rhyl Library, learners will spend 1 day per week learning in a classroom, and 1 additional day per week of work experience. In Holyhead and Caernarfon the work experience takes place at the end of the course.

Tutors will help students arrange their placements. Hours are child-friendly, totalling less than 16/17 hours per week.

The course is free, but students must complete a DBS check with the College which (currently) costs £38. The cost of the DBS check will be £49.50 from December.

Delivery

The course is delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Lectures
  • Presentations
  • Group work
  • Classroom-based learning

You will spend 2 days per week in the classroom: 9.30am–2.30pm.

You will also have a work placement in a school for 1 day a week, 5 hours per week, at times to suit the school.

Assessment

You will be assessed by portfolio.
