Course Description
Would you like a career in the diverse food and hospitality industry? Are you looking to gain professional skills in cookery and food service?
This course gives you a broad introduction to the industry, providing you with experience of preparing, presenting and serving a range of foods and beverages. It also allows you to gain multiple qualifications and boosts your future prospects.
You will be expected to purchase kit, uniform and books, costing approximately £280 (subject to change). Help towards this cost may be available through grants.
Entry Criteria
In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:
- 2 GCSEs at grade D or above
- You will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to study by achieving your GCSE target grades and completing year 11 with good attendance.
- Successful completion of a Traineeship, Pre-vocational, Pathways or School Link Programme
- Relevant industry experience
Applicants already studying at the college will need an attendance of 86% on their current course.
As part of the application process, you will be asked to attend an interview to give you the opportunity to discuss the course.

- Practical sessions in a realistic working environment
Your programme will include a combination of:
- Essential Skills qualifications and/or
- GCSE resits

This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills
GCSE resits
This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.
Maths & Welsh/English
If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.
Assessment
The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:
- Observations of your practical work
- Practical tests throughout the year
- Written assignments
Progression
Completion of this course provides you with a number of options in education and employment. If you choose to progress directly into employment, you will have the knowledge, skills and qualifications to work in a range of catering and hospitality environments. You will also have studied Food Safety to an industry level, which will be a valuable asset.
Many students will choose to progress further in education, gaining a more specialised expertise and greater career options. After this course, you could take the Professional Cookery Level 2. This could eventually lead to a Foundation Degree in Culinary Arts, or to a number of professional roles.
