Course Description
Would you like a career in vessel operations, either on the water or on the shore?
This programme allows you to gain important skills for the shore-based industry, including boatbuilding, yacht maintenance and marine engineering. It also introduces you to practical disciplines on the water, and sea-based training will be a key element of your learning.
The programme is hands-on, with an emphasis on gaining practical skills both in the workshop and at sea. You will also work on a range of projects, maintaining and operating vessels both in College and at sea.
As well as gaining this qualification, you will be able to achieve a long list of RYA/MCA short programmes and industry standard licences.
Entry Criteria
In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:
- 3 GCSEs at grade D or above, and 1 GCSE at grade E, including English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths, or
- A BTEC Level 1 qualification in Marine Engineering completed to a satisfactory standard, or
- PEO level 1 in engineering completed to a satisfactory standard and with good attendance, or
- Relevant industry experience
As part of the application process, you will be asked to attend an interview to give you the opportunity to discuss the course.
Delivery
The programme is delivered through a blend of the following:
- Practical workshop and classroom sessions
- Project work
- Time at sea
The £8.2 million Marine and Built Environment Centre (MBEC) at Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhos-on-Sea Campus includes a specialist marine and boat building facility with a range of full and part-time courses, to support the UK’s multi-billion pound industry.

If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.
Assessment
The programme is assessed through a blend of the following:
- Assignments
- Exams
- Programme work
- Portfolios
- Practical assessment on the water, by trained instructors
Progression
Completion of this programme can lead to a number of options in education and employment. You could proceed onto a number of programmes at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, including:
- Marine Engineering Level 3
- Apprenticeship Level 3 in Marine Engineering
Successful students regularly secure places on fully sponsored industry training schemes (Merchant Navy Cadetships) and embark on rewarding careers as navigators and engineers on a variety different vessels such as cruise ships, tankers and sailing yachts.
Marine learners also find positions on workboats, superyachts, sailing craft/ yacht charter and also in shore-based boat building, maintenance and repair.
