Course Description
This course aims to provide the knowledge and skills require to operate a telescopic handler. It is suitable for operators of all abilities and those who have received no previous formal training or instruction.
At the end of the course all learners should be able to:
• Operate the plant machinery during normal routine tasks
• Assess whether particular loads are safe to lift
• Carry out routine telehandler servicing and plant maintenance in line with manufacturing instructions
• Carry out minor mechanical adjustments
• Prepare the vehicle to drive on public highways in accordance with the requirements Part II of the UK Road Traffic Act.
• Understand the purpose and capabilities of the machine and any relevant safety precautions required for its operations.
• Understand how the telehandler machine works and the maintenance involved.
• Understand the effects of load, size, weight, gradients and ground conditions upon machine stability and safety.
• Describe the loading, storage and transit of representative materials.
• Describe the basic construction of pallets.
• Describe the permitted loading of scaffolds.
Entry Criteria
All learners
- An in date CITB Health, Safety and Environment touchscreen test.
- A good understanding of Welsh and/or English is required.
Novice Learners
- No experience required
Experienced/ Refresher
- Either 18 months provable work experience and/ or 6 months consistent daily experience in this category
Delivery
Learning through a mix of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises
Assessment
4 days learning through a mix of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises
1 day assessment – NPORS technical tests
Progression
After completing this course, the learner will be awarded a NPORS/ CSCS Card Red Trained Operatives card. This is valid for 2 years and learners will be required to register for a relevant NVQ.
Upon the successful completion of the NVQ, learners will be awarded a Blue Competent Operators card. This is valid for 5 years. An operator logbook/ CPD record is also issued which will can be used to support refresher and experienced training.
Refresher training is advised every 3 years.
