Course Description

This course is currently under revalidation in consultation with employers and stakeholders, in order to refresh course content for delivery from September 2025

This module is one of the full Professional Certificate/Professional Graduate Certificate in Education course.

This part-time course is aimed at professionally qualified and experienced people who may not currently be teaching or training, but who are keen to develop the knowledge and skills which will allow them to do so.

Candidates are normally interested in working in the post-compulsory sector (e.g further education, adult and community education, prisons or work-based learning).

This course is not intended for those wishing to teach in Primary or Secondary schools.

Entry Criteria

  • A minimum of a Level 3 qualification relevant to the subject specialism you wish to teach
  • Vocational tutors should have significant experience (at least five years in the field)
  • Enhanced DBS check
  • Evidence of literacy and numeracy skills at Level 2 or above
  • For overseas applicants: proficiency in English Language at IELTS level 7 or equivalent

If your qualifications do not meet the entry requirements listed above, we would still encourage you to apply for the course you're interested in, as many of our courses will consider learners based on their previous work and skills experience rather than their qualifications.

Unit information

This short 10-12 week course will introduce you to the basic principles of teaching and learning. You will explore the roles and responsibilities of practitioners in the lifelong learning sector including the promotion of good practice to ensure equality of opportunity for all.

Sessions will introduce you to the principles and practices of the main methods of managing learning in typical situations and contexts; the use of learning aids with an emphasis on learning technologies; assessment and evaluation methods.

Topics covered will include an awareness of teaching and learning in a bilingual setting; the identification and experience of learning events and the learning climate; and communication skills and styles of teaching.
