Course Description
This course is for operators who can show prior formal training, usually certification. Refresher training is recommended by the HSE every 3-5 years.
Entry Criteria
None
Delivery
Learning through a mix of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises
Assessment
Operators are assessed on their:
- Ability to carry out a pre-use check
- Theory and understand of the operating limits and safe working practices
Practical Ability to operate the truck safely.
Progression
Operators can progress onto other lift trucks including industrial Counterbalance and Telehandler.
Or progress onto off road Telehandler for the construction and farming industries. Candidates can also progress onto NVQ courses in Warehousing and Transport

The RTITB REACH Lift Truck (often referred to as a forklift) operator training course will give you the skills to operate the truck safely and efficiently, carry out a pre-use inspection, and recall and explain the causes of truck and load instability.
This course covers, but is not limited to, the following areas;
- Lift truck controls and instruments
- Starting/moving/stopping and steering the truck
- Operation of hydraulic controls
- On/off ramp driving
- Vehicle loading and unloading
- Stacking and destacking
- Lift truck stability
- The operators’ safety code
