Student Union

At college, you will have the opportunity to join our award winning Students' Union; who have recently just won an award for celebrating excellence in Learner Voice.

Student Union Presidents (SUP) are elected by their fellow peers to be the voice of their college and support learners whilst they are studying with us here at GLLM.

SUP’s work closely with class representatives of their course to ensure that their voice is truly listened to. Each term we hold Learner Panels and from there we get feedback on what is going really well whilst you are with us and what can be improved from that we create a “You said, we did”.

This years Student Union Presidents are:

Coleg Llandrillo - Rhys Morris

Rhys is studying Public Services at the Rhyl campus. Rhys pledges that he would like to improve transparency, increase student engagement and ensure that the voice of students is at the heart of everything we aim to achieve. Well done Rhys!

Coleg Menai - Munachi Nneji

Munachi is studying A-levels with us at our Llangefni campus. Munachi pledges to increase the awareness of physical health and wellness to students and promote sustainable practices on campus, such as recycling, reducing waste, and conserving energy creating a green and healthy campus environment. Well done Munachi!

Coleg Meirion Dwyfor - Troy Maclean

Troy is studying Life Skills with us at our Dolgellau campus. Troy pledges to increase the well-being and mental health of students, and promote a more supportive landscape where all students can feel comfortable in discussing their course issues and also increasing the quality and costs of food, not just the campus that he is studying on, he is very keen to ensure all learners are included. Well done Troy!

Higher Education Student Union Rep - Rhiannon Williams

Rhiannon is studying a Higher Education Professional Graduate Certificate in Education programme at our Bangor campus. She pledges that she will help students overcome obstacles, break barriers and achieve their dreams because of the opportunities provided by higher education. Well done Rhiannon!

Future options

Every year we have a Learner Calendar where both the Student Enrichment Officer and Presidents ensure that throughout the year we celebrate and support learners with different events ranging from Mental Health Awareness Months to ADHD awareness days. We ensure that throughout our campuses both staff and learners support these events.

Each year we hold a Learner Conference which is organised and supported by the Student Union Presidents. At the conference both Further Education and Higher Education learners get together for a day and we discuss varied topics. The 2023/2024 Learner Conference theme was ‘Learner Voice’ where we looked at our values and what we can do differently going forward. We also had guest speakers ranging from the Welsh Assembly Government to Charity Shelter Cymru.

Class Representatives

Every full-time and substantial part-time course elects a class representative. He/she/they will act as the spokesperson for that group

of students. A class rep is chosen for each group of students on a programme, some programmes/courses also elect a deputy. Class representatives are the voices of their class for the entire academic year.

The main responsibility of the class rep is to represent the views of the students in Learner Panel meetings and they will have opportunities to raise any issues that the students would like addressed and to highlight areas of good practice for dissemination. Their role is to express the views of the whole group - it is not the reps’ responsibility to act on behalf of an individual who may have issues with their tutor or course coordinator.

Learner Panels

Leaner Panels are traditionally held three times per year (once per term) at each main college campus and chaired by the relevant college Principal or the Assistant Principal. The meetings are intended to be highly participative and focus on specific issues of interest or concern. Before each Learner Panel you will be sent a set of questions that the Principal or Assistant Principal would like to go through however at the end of each panel you will be asked if there is anything else you would like to talk about where you will have a chance to go through anything you have discussed with your class.

Class reps are invited to attend and share their opinions, ideas, concerns and suggestions for improvement. In recent years, the term 2 Learner Panels have been replaced with the highly participative cross Grŵp Learner Conference. Actions from the Learner Panels are fed back via the ‘You Said, We Did’ section within eDrac Learner.
