A-level students enjoy ‘Cwrs Mamiaith’ at Glan-llyn
Learners from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor Pwllheli heard talks from accomplished writers, took part in a poetry competition and much more at the outdoor activities centre
A-level Welsh students from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor took part in Cwrs Mamiaith at Gwersyll yr Urdd Glan-llyn recently.
Cwrs Mamiaith is organised every year by the outdoor activity centre and the Welsh department at Bangor University.
It is a chance for students at colleges and sixth forms across Wales to enhance their knowledge of Welsh language and literature gained from their classroom studies.
Nine students from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s Pwllheli campus attended this year’s course at the centre in Llanuwchllyn, near y Bala.
There, they heard talks from bards, authors and academics including Myrddin ap Dafydd, Menna Baines, Gruffudd Antur, Caryl Lewis, Peredur Lynch and Naomi Jones. They also visited Yr Ysgwrn, the former home of Welsh poet Hedd Wyn, who was killed in the Battle of Passchendaele during the First World War.
The packed timetable also included team-building activities such as canoeing, climbing and high ropes, as well as a Twmpath (a traditional Welsh dance) and a Talwrn (poetry competition).
Bethan Mair Hughes, A-level lecturer, said: “The girls really enjoyed the three-day experience. They were there with students from 21 other Welsh sixth forms and colleges.
“They got to know their fellow peers through the Twmpath and got to show their competitive side in the Talwrn, which lasted more than four hours!”
Elliw Siôn Evans, who studies A-levels in Welsh, Business Studies and Law, said: “The first-language course at Glan-llyn was a very valuable experience as it really helped with the poems and the drama we study on the Welsh A-level course.
“The lectures have given me a better understanding of the college work and the resources will be very useful. The course was also an opportunity to make new friends and have memorable experiences whilst taking part in the activities!"
