Begw and Dylan in Wales squads for U18 Six Nations

Coleg Menai student Begw Ffransis Roberts and Coleg Llandrillo learner Dylan Alford have been rewarded with call-ups after impressing for Wales and RGC

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai students Begw Ffransis Roberts and Dylan Alford have been called up to the Wales squads for the Under-18 Six Nations Rugby Festivals.

Begw, who studies Level 3 Sport at Coleg Menai in Llangefni, is in the squad for the girls’ tournament.

Coleg Llandrillo student Dylan, who is on the Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science course at Rhos-on-Sea, has been called up for the boys’ competition.

The girls’ festival takes place at Stadiwm CSM in Colwyn Bay from Friday 29 March to Saturday 6 April.

Wales will play 35-minute games against France and Scotland on Friday, and Ireland and England on Tuesday 2 April, before a 70-minute game against Italy on the final day.

Wales U18 girls’ head coach Siwan Lillicrap said: “This is an exciting squad full of ambitious players with real potential for the U18s Six Nations tournament we are hosting in Colwyn Bay.

“The squad preparation has gone exceptionally well over the past six weeks, with the growth, application, and commitment of the players being truly inspirational over a short period of time.

“The hard work that the girls have put in over the season has paid off with their selection. The important part is yet to come and hopefully this exciting opportunity they have is the start of their journey in the Welsh Pathway.”

The U18 boys’ festival takes place in Parma, Italy, and involves Portugal and Georgia for the first time. Each team will play three 70-minute matches between Saturday 30 March and Sunday 7 April.

Wales play England on Saturday, Portugal on Tuesday 3 April and France on the final day.

U18 boys’ head coach Richie Pugh said: “It’s an exciting squad who have prepped well. We’ve had a large squad in and it has been difficult to narrow it down just to 26 players because off the back of the regional programme there is a lot of talent in the U18s group.

“This is what we want to expose the boys to, up against some of the best teams that they can come across. England and France are definitely two of those top teams and Portugal are a new team which will offer the group a new challenge.”

Begw and Dylan both play for RGC, and were involved in U18 international matches in preparation for the Six Nations Festivals. Begw also helped RGC’s U18s girls become the first team from North Wales ever to win a WRU Regional Age Grade competition.
