Coleg Glynllifon joint winners of Young Farmers Sports Day

The boys’ rugby team beat Coleg Ceredigion, Llysfasi and NPTC in the inaugural event for Wales’ agricultural colleges

Coleg Glynllifon’s boys’ rugby team finished as joint winners of the inaugural Young Farmers Sports Day.

The event, featuring a 10-a-side rugby tournament and a tug-of-war competition, was a gathering of all Wales’ agricultural colleges, held at Aberystwyth Rugby Club and organised by the Active Wellbeing teams at Coleg Ceredigion and Coleg Sir Gâr.

Glynllifon got off to a great start, winning 21-14 in a close opening match against a team representing Coleg Ceredigion’s Cardigan campus. They then lost to Coleg Sir Gâr’s Gelli Aur campus, who fielded a strong and well organised side.

In their next game, Glynllifon dug deep against Coleg Cambria’s Llysfasi team, triumphing 19-10 to retain the North Wales bragging rights.

They then recorded a comprehensive 33-5 victory against NPTC’s Newtown College, finishing the day as joint winners, tied on points with Gelli Aur and Cardigan.

The team is now looking forward to the Rygbi Gogledd Cymru Under-18s Schools and Colleges Cup, starting off with their regional qualification group against Ysgol Brynrefail, Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen and Ysgol Tryfan.

Ollie Coles, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and WRU Rugby Engagement Officer, said: “The Young Farmers Sports Day was a brilliant opportunity for our learners to represent Coleg Glynllifon and North Wales more broadly on a national level.

“The boys represented Coleg Glynllifon and the North fantastically well. It was great to see them interacting with and competing against fellow young farmers from all across Wales in our national sport. Both staff and learners are very much looking forward to next year’s event.”

The event coincided with World Mental Health Day, and was attended by mental health charities including Tir Dewi, FCN, DPJ Foundation, and the NHS lechyd Da youth health team, as well as farming charities.
