Learners enjoy ‘incredible’ Japan trip

Coleg Menai Hairdressing students visited Tokyo and Nagoya to learn about Japanese culture and the country’s hair and beauty industry

Coleg Menai learners enjoyed the trip of a lifetime to learn about the hair and beauty industry in Japan.

Level 3 Hairdressing students spent a week in Tokyo and a week in Nagoya, visiting colleges and other training institutions to learn how the sector works in Japan.

They were accompanied by their tutor Awena Williams, Coleg Menai’s programme area manager for service industries and business Cath Skipp, and Grŵp Llandrillo Menai international officer Andy Brookes.

The trip was funded by the Turing Scheme via Colegau Cymru and Japanese training company Seyfert, meaning students didn’t have to pay a penny for their travel, food or accommodation.

After arriving in Tokyo, learners had two induction days to learn about the country’s language, culture and etiquette.

During their week in the capital, they visited Tokyo Beauty and Bridal College, where they worked with Japanese learners and had the opportunity to use virtual reality headsets to practice their techniques.

The students also visited a boutique salon, where they were given a demonstration of different techniques commonly used in Japan, as well as a wholesaler where they were able to buy hair products.

They also enjoyed a trip to Kinujo, a hairdryer and straighteners manufacturer, where they watched a demonstration by a renowned Tokyo stylist, and were able to try out equipment yet to be launched in the UK.

After a full first week of activities, students had the chance to do some sightseeing on the Saturday - including visiting Rappongi Hills and taking in the stunning views from one of Tokyo’s tallest buildings, the 330-metre high Mori Tower.

Then on the Sunday, they took the bullet train along Japan’s coast to Nagoya, the country’s fourth largest city, which would be their base for the second week of their stay.

There, they spent a few days with the Nagoya Beauty College, with activities including nail art and body art sessions, and a trip to Kyoto to learn about Japan’s famous Geisha.

They also visited a popular wedding venue at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, where they watched a lavish, mocked-up wedding to see the work that goes into the hair and make-up for a traditional Japanese ceremony.

The learners thoroughly enjoyed the trip, with Ffion Newell saying: “I learned so much over the two weeks we were there. The highlight of the trip for me was visiting the salons and colleges and learning their skills and techniques in hairdressing.

“Japan is such a beautiful country. I really enjoyed interacting with the people, learning about their culture and experiencing everything they had to offer. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to visit and experience Japan.”

Elan Rayner said: “My highlight was seeing the different culture. They have different rules that they follow strictly, which was eye-opening.

“Their modern technology was incredible. I learnt a different way of washing and blow-drying the hair to match the needs of Japanese hair types. Going to the hair salon in Japan is all about the relaxing experience. Their perming techniques are very different to ours, and much harder. I will most definitely be going back to visit Japan.”

Alicja B said: “My perception of the canons of beauty has changed. The trip has broadened my mindset in terms of different cultures and will help me as a hairdresser. I would definitely like to go back to Japan!”

International officer Andy Brookes said: “We are so pleased with how this trip worked out for the learners and staff involved. We'd like to thank the staff from Seyfert for a truly memorable experience.

“Our learners were given a unique opportunity to experience a different culture and way of working in the context of their college course. They met some wonderful Japanese students and teachers and experienced lots of aspects of Japanese culture. I am sure that the memories of the trip will last a lifetime.”
