Older People’s Commissioner visits computing class to see the impact of digital skills training on local community

The Older People’s Commissioner for Wales visited the popular Computing & Digital Skills for Beginners class in Benllech this week, to gain insight into the positive impact of community-based digital classes for older people.

Delivered by Potensial at Coleg Menai, the Computing & Digital Skills course is aimed at empowering older people with the confidence and ability to navigate the digital world.

The Commissioner - Rhian Bowen-Davies’ visit highlighted the importance of accessible learning opportunities for those looking to develop essential digital skills, such as using smartphones and tablets.

The course covers the basics of smartphone and tablet use, enabling participants to stay connected with family, access important information, and engage with services online.

A key component of the course has been the loaning of Samsung 7 tablets, generously funded by Age Cymru.

Participants in the community courses have greatly benefited from the tablets, using them to develop their basic IT skills and build confidence in technology. For many, this has been a stepping stone to purchasing their own devices, fostering independence and inclusion in the digital age.

Rhian Bowen-Davies, Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, said,

“As online services continue to play a greater role in our everyday lives, it’s essential that older people can access the support they need to learn digital skills so they’re not excluded and left behind.

“It was great to join older people for the class at Coleg Menai to see the positive difference these classes have made in terms of building people’s confidence and enabling them to get online to access information and services, as well as stay connected with family and friends.”

In addition to courses in digital skills, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai offers a wide variety of free, adult and community classes across the north west region of Wales. Class sizes are usually small, consisting of between 8-12 learners, ensuring personalised attention and a comfortable pace for all participants.

Catrin Williams, Programme Area Manager for Adult and Community Learning at Coleg Menai, said,

“The Older People’s Commissioner’s visit underscores the vital role that such community initiatives play in supporting older people and helping them remain connected in an increasingly digital world. With the help of organisations like Age Cymru, these classes are helping to bridge the digital divide for older people, offering them the tools they need to thrive in the modern world”
