Construction businesses help CaMDA students build industry knowledge

Dafydd Jones, an architectural technologist from Russell Hughes architects, and Kevin Jones, a bricklayer and plasterer from Adeiladwyr D+S Jones, visited learners at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor in Dolgellau

An architectural technologist and a construction worker gave students an invaluable insight into the sector when they visited Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor in Dolgellau.

Dafydd Jones, an architectural technologist from Russell Hughes architects, and Kevin Jones, a bricklayer and plasterer from Adeiladwyr D&S Jones, spoke to learners in the CaMDA construction and engineering centre at the Marian campus.

Dafydd gave a presentation about the types of designs needed in order to forward planning applications to county councils, and how these designs are developed further following planning permission in order to guide developers and construction workers.

Russell Hughes Ltd operates in Anglesey, Conwy and Gwynedd, and Dafydd also discussed the importance of being able to use the Welsh language in these counties.

Kevin, a former Coleg Menai student, spoke to learners about work readiness, giving tips on what makes a good apprentice, and on industry expectations.

He also spoke about building regulations, working for private/domestic customers and the differences in working on larger contracts and public contracts.

Kevin highlighted the importance of skills competitions, having competed successfully during his time at Coleg Menai’s Llangefni campus. Like Dafydd, he also spoke about the advantages of being able to communicate bilingually.

Iestyn Worth, a lecturer in the construction department, said: “I would like to thank Dafydd and Kevin for valuable presentations to our learners. Their presentations were inspiring and a strong motivation for our learners, showing them what is in store for their careers.

“It is comforting to know that the Welsh language is considered an essential skill for companies that serve Gwynedd and Anglesey, and this reinforces the need for our learners to be using the language in their studies, as is promoted on Grŵp Llandrillo Menai campuses.”
