Dolgellau student receives Bangor University Degree Scholarship from Gwynedd Council.

Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor is delighted to announce that one of its A-level students from its Dolgellau campus, Ceri Mai Jones, has been awarded a scholarship by Bangor University and Gwynedd Council to study Computer Science from September.

While Ceri is studying, she will also work for the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency's department focusing on cyber security. The scholarship means that Ceri will not have to pay any tuition fees, and will also receive a salary while studying and working.

Ceri Mai Jones said: "This is a great opportunity. I was accepted to study Computer Science at the University of Liverpool, thanks to the encouragement of my Dolgellau tutor, Hugh Hughes. I applied for the scholarship with Gwynedd Council and was successful.”

She added: "Starting a higher education course without having to worry about the cost of fees is absolutely fantastic, and I’ll get paid in the process too. I feel incredibly lucky to have this opportunity to develop my computer skills through the medium of Welsh in a rapidly developing field. Also I feel privileged to be one of only two women working in the computer department at the CSSIW and I hope to see the number of women in this field increase.”

Huw Hughes, Computer Science A-level lecturer at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, Dolgellau said: "Seeing students succeed in this way is very encouraging to me. Ceri's dedication and hard work has once again paid off. This kind of opportunity is invaluable; Ceri would have left North Wales otherwise. Keeping people like Ceri with these advanced skills in an important field is extremely important. Well done Ceri."
