Engineering students have the tools for success

Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor learners were presented with tool kits from Carl Kammerling International after the Pwllheli’s company’s sponsorship of last year’s F1 in Schools UK finalists

Engineering students were presented with new Carl Kammerling tools - following a proposal from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s successful F1 in Schools team.

Learners on the BTEC Level 3 Enhanced General Engineering course traditionally receive new tools after completing the first year of their studies.

This year’s cohort were recently presented with theirs, which were sourced from Pwllheli firm Carl Kammerling (CK) Tools following their sponsorship of ‘Team Come and Go’.

Team Come and Go, comprising engineering students from the Pwllheli campus, reached the UK final of last year’s F1 in Schools competition.

After their success, they put forward a case for the college to invest in quality equipment for students from CK Tools.

As a result, learners are now working with the locally-sourced tools as they continue their studies in the final year of their course.

Cai Jones, Math Hughes, Guto Roberts, Isabella Greenway and Jack Harte were all presented with their tool kits by Marius Jones, Programme Area Manager for Engineering at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor.

Marius said: “It was a great pleasure for me to present each learner with a starter toolbox consisting of a 39-piece ratchet set, adjustable spanner, hammer, hacksaw, level and vernier calliper from the renowned quality of the CK range of tools.”

The students complete the enhanced engineering programme in the first year of their studies, while the second year takes them to the extended diploma in general engineering.

As part of the enhanced engineering course, learners are required to complete 150 hours of work experience alongside their studies. This involved the students working through half term and Easter holidays last year as they gained invaluable real-world experience.

Marius added: “A great deal of work goes on behind the scenes from our dedicated staff at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai to make this possible.

“We have a great team working together to provide our learners with the best opportunities and experiences while they study on the BTEC Enhanced Engineering Course. The involvement and support of local employers does not go unnoticed. We could not provide this essential service without them all.”

Emlyn Evans, engineering lecturer at the Pwllheli and Dolgellau campuses, said: “We are very grateful to all the companies who have provided this support as part of the work placement scheme, and continue to do so every year.

“Congratulations to Cai, Math, Guto, Isabella and Jack, our engineers of the future from the Dolgellau campus, who have completed the enhanced programme and received their starter toolkit.”
