Free numeracy courses on offer this summer with Multiply

People in Gwynedd, Anglesey, Conwy and Denbighshire can improve their number skills through airfryer lessons, carpentry classes, craft sessions and more

Airfryer lessons, carpentry classes, and buying your first home workshops are just a few of the FREE numeracy classes being offered this summer by the Multiply Project with Grŵp Llandrillo Menai.

The Numeracy for Living - Multiply project helps adults improve their confidence with numbers in everyday life, offering easy access to a wide range of maths courses across North Wales.

Already this summer, people have improved their number skills with Multiply by taking part in sewing classes, bingo, a beach clean, origami sessions and activities at the Llanrwst Show.

To be eligible you must be 19 years or over, and live within the counties of Gwynedd, Denbighshire, Conwy or Anglesey.

See below for details of courses on offer in each county:

GWYNEDD

Megan Price, Gwynedd’s Curriculum Coordinator for Multiply, said: “We have got some really fun things going on over the holidays in community venues and in the college itself.

“The focus is more practical things going on to get people busy, by using their hands and using maths in an engaging way.”

Courses offered in Gwynedd include:

DENBIGHSHIRE

Stronger relationships are also being made with businesses and organisations around Denbighshire, with tailored courses in numeracy confidence and essential life skills.

Blossom & Bloom’s “Help Your Child With Maths - Primary School” course will run on August 15, 22, and 29 (1pm to 3pm).

Alex Carter, Denbighshire’s Engagement Coordinator, said: “This course is for parents who may struggle to understand what is taught in maths lessons, feeling unable to help their child with homework and other key activities.

“We help them understand what is taught on the maths curriculum and, more importantly, how it is taught - this will provide them with the skills and knowledge needed to support their child."

CONWY

Conwy County is working with schools to balance the practical and mathematical through workshops for the entire family.

Joseph Mark Lloyd-Jones, Conwy County’s Coordinator, said: “The project strives to promote intergenerational numeracy confidence in the local community. Hopefully we can get everyone involved with something that applies to their everyday lives.”

Ysgol Eirias and Ysgol-y-Foryd have hosted several Multiply courses, including how to run a small business, helping children with their maths homework, and even using air fryers on a budget.

ANGLESEY

Welding, carpentry, plumbing and basic car mechanics are just a few of the workshops with a “do-it-yourself” attitude to maths later this summer.

Alaw Jones, Anglesey’s Coordinator said: “We want to bring numeracy into some engaging activities with the project. You often get people who might find it intimidating, so offering a more practical approach could make a huge difference.”

The island will also be hosting a variety of basic culinary and craft classes including cooking on a budget, cooking with children, and macramé.

“It is a proper family focus, giving both generations a set of tools to cook better and to stick with affordable means. Obviously in the climate we are in right now these are essential.”

Individuals can also work towards a Level 2 qualification (GCSE or Essential Skills Wales Application of Number), fully funded under the Multiply project, to progress into further studies or employment.

The support can be provided on a 1:1 basis, to a small group or classroom and can work around family, work and other commitments.

Multiply works with individuals, community groups, third-sector organisations, schools, and small and large businesses. The flexibility of the project means support can be tailored for individual or group needs.

The content of the courses is wide-ranging and flexible, while Multiply sessions can be held on weekdays, weeknights or weekends.

Multiply is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Grŵp Llandrillo Menai leads on the Multiply project in Gwynedd, Anglesey, Conwy and Denbighshire.
