The Grŵp was celebrated at the National Union of Students Wales annual conference for its commitment to ensuring learner voice is heard
Grŵp Llandrillo Menai won the Learner Voice award at the NUS Wales annual conference.
The award celebrates the Grŵp’s commitment to encourage and include learners’ voice, through hosting its annual Learner Conference and developing support plans in collaboration with students.
The Grŵp’s Student Union presidents Kyra Wilkinson, Claire Bailey, Jason Scott, Alaw Jones and Cara Haf Parry were presented with the accolade at the National Union of Students (NUS) Wales’ conference at Aberystwyth University.
Also at the two-day conference, former Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor student Deio Owen was announced as the new NUS Wales President.
The conference was an opportunity for learners and staff to discuss policies, share ideas and network with other colleges and universities.
Among the issues debated were on-campus healthcare access, NUS democracy, a potential name change from NUS Wales to NUS Cymru, and the Welsh independence movement.
Jason Scott, Coleg Menai’s Student Union president, said of the conference: “It was an insightful experience to come to fully understand the workings of the NUS and to find out what other unions are doing to help their students and gain new ideas on how we could better improve the lives of our fellow classmates.
“It was a great feeling to be able to clearly express our opinions on the debated topics and have our thoughts taken into consideration to potentially make a substantial difference.
“The topics of this year's NUS Wales conference were incredibly diverse, ranging from the potential independence of Wales to the implementation of healthcare facilities inside of college and university campuses. This made the conference very engaging as there were plenty of different opinions and ideas throughout our time there.”
Aaron Beacher, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai Student Enrichment Officer, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for our Student Union presidents to discuss important topics and gain new ideas on how they can improve the learners’ experience while studying with us here at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai.
