Grŵp Llandrillo Menai leads the way in delivering Higher Education in Welsh
A report has found that the Grŵp has the highest proportion of university-level students in the country studying in Cymraeg
Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has the highest proportion of Higher Education students in Wales studying courses in Welsh, according to a new report.
The report from Medr, the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research in Wales, found that 31% of Higher Education students at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai studied a proportion of their studies in Welsh, in comparison to the average of 4% of students nationally.
Set up in August last year, Medr is the Welsh Government-sponsored body responsible for funding and regulating Wales's tertiary education and research sector. The statistics in the report refer to the 2022/23 academic year.
Medr’s report found that 13% of students in Wales are fluent Welsh speakers. With many learners choosing the convenience of studying locally, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai is leading the way in providing bilingual Higher Education in Wales.
The Grŵp offers university-level courses in more than 30 subject areas, with most of its degree courses validated and awarded by Bangor University.
Timetables are designed to accommodate work, family, and other commitments. Full and part-time courses are mainly delivered one or two days per week, while some courses are offered in the evenings.
Student satisfaction with the quality of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s Higher Education provision was scored at 89% in the latest National Student Survey - ranking the Grŵp as the top provider in Wales according to students.
Hailey Hockenhull, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai Director of Higher Education, said: “The opportunity to study in Cymraeg is one of the many advantages of our high-quality university-level courses, which are amongst the best in Wales for student satisfaction.
“Grŵp Llandrillo Menai is committed to promoting and supporting the Welsh language, and our Higher Education provision is designed to meet language needs in critical sectors of the region’s economy, including health and social care, and engineering.
“We provide all university-level students with the opportunity to be assessed in Cymraeg. Some courses are also taught wholly bilingually, and a Welsh Language Bursary is available for Welsh-speaking students.
“Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s students also benefit from the excellent teaching of our highly qualified staff, with smaller class sizes ensuring more time can be dedicated to individual support and guidance. Students are able to study close to home, and fit their Higher Education studies around family and work commitments."
Angharad Roberts, Director of Bilingual Development, Skills and Learning Resources, said: “Giving learners opportunities to study in Cymraeg is a key priority area for us as a Grŵp. We take great pride in having the highest proportion of learners studying at least one credit of their Higher Education programmes in Welsh.
“Our strategic vision has always been leading the way in Cymru’s bilingual provision. This proves that we're excelling not only across our Further Education provision, where we are the biggest deliverer of bilingual education, but across Higher Education as well.
“We will continue to prioritise this work and ensure that we plan strategically to give all learners as many opportunities as possible to complete their studies with us in Cymraeg, whatever course they're studying.”
