How Multiply helped Gwydion achieve an ‘A’ in GCSE Maths
Gwydion Evans is now looking forward to gaining more qualifications after his education was disrupted by the pandemic
Multiply learner Gwydion Evans is celebrating after achieving an A in GCSE Maths.
The Numeracy for Living - Multiply project helps adults improve their confidence with numbers in everyday life, with access to a range of FREE maths courses.
It can also lead to a formal qualification - and that’s what happened after Gwydion accessed free one-on-one lessons through Multiply.
After just three months of tuition, the 19-year-old aced his GCSE Maths, and has now signed up for GCSE English and Welsh at Coleg Menai as he looks to gain more qualifications and enhance his career prospects.
“I thought the one-on-one lessons were really helpful for learning things quite quickly and having a more dedicated, curated course which let me really sink my teeth into it,” said Gwydion, who signed up for Multiply as his education had been disrupted by the pandemic.
“There was a lot of stuff I missed out on in school, and I think I learned a lot about myself as well, about how I work with learning particularly.”
Asked how he felt about achieving an A-grade, Gwydion said: “Yeah, I can say I'm quite happy about that - I think Multiply really gave me the help I needed to get this result under my belt.”
Grŵp Llandrillo Menai leads on the Multiply project across Gwynedd, Môn, Conwy and Denbighshire. Gwydion attended lessons with his tutor Kevin Mulhall at Coleg Menai, as well as having online sessions.
“Kevin was an excellent tutor through all of this,” Gwydion said. “I've been through a lot of different sorts of courses during this period of my life and I found that a lot of them didn't work out as well for me, but Multiply was able to keep me going until the end and keep me motivated.”
Kevin said: “An A-grade is an absolutely excellent result, and it demonstrates that motivation combined with individual teaching can be an effective combination.
“Gwydion is clearly very able and his abilities have come to the fore outside of the traditional educational setting which was not best suited to his learning style in the past.
“I believe he has plans to progress further possibly to A-levels and also to HE in the future, and I am sure that his personal motivation and ability will enable him to flourish and achieve his goals.”
Sioned Williams, Multiply Project Manager, said: “We are incredibly proud of Gwydion's accomplishment in securing a grade A Maths GCSE. His success exemplifies the core aim of the Multiply project, which is to empower individuals in their everyday lives through enhanced numeracy skills.
“This achievement is more than just a milestone for Gwydion; it is a foundation that will enable him to pursue further education and career opportunities. I would encourage any individual aged 19+ in Gwynedd, Môn, Conwy or Denbighshire to take part in this life-changing initiative.”
