Lifelong Learning Hub to open in centre of Bangor

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has unveiled plans to open a lifelong learning hub on Bangor High Street.

Working in conjunction with the Welsh Government’s ‘Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme’ and Cyngor Gwynedd’s Economy and Community department, the former Topshop retail outlet in the city centre is currently being remodelled into a multi-use facility -Tŷ Cyfle - with the hope of creating a flourishing, vibrant space that will benefit the residents of Bangor and the wider area.

Expanding on the provision already available at Caernarfon and Holyhead’s Tŷ Cyfle lifelong learning hubs, the new Bangor premises will benefit the local community through:

● Delivering part-time courses on literacy, digital literacy, employability skills, learning support, confidence building, numeracy, and more - all led by qualified and experienced staff.

● Employment linked taster sessions – linked to areas of skill requirements in North West Wales (e.g. STEM) and ‘meet the employer’ events.

● Life Skills Support – e.g. basic financial management, cooking on a budget, confidence building, wellbeing, health, etc.

The education-provider plans to work with partners such as Bangor University and the Local Authority to support local residents by delivering a wide range of classes, workshops and one-to-one sessions.

Tŷ Cyfle will consist of four classrooms, as well as meeting spaces, interview rooms and offices. The multi-use building will also serve as a base for full time students to engage with the Bangor community via vox pops and street performances.

Siôn Peters-Flynn , Principal of Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor within Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, said,

“We look forward to having a presence on the high street in Bangor and playing a pivotal role in the community. Its location in the city centre and proximity to public transport links makes it an ideal location for prospective learners to reach the site sustainably”

He added, “We’re extremely grateful to the Welsh Government for their continued support and will be working closely with them over the coming months to confirm a funding programme for the scheme”.

Tŷ Cyfle is anticipated to open its doors in January 2025, following the recent opening of the new Bangor campus, situated on the Parc Menai business park.
