Lockheed Martin Degree Apprenticeship is First Class

A former Grŵp Llandrillo Menai apprentice has proved that you can gain a degree without accumulating debt. Jack Edwards recently graduated with a first-class honours BEng degree in Applied Electrical and Electronic Engineering Systems.

He began his career and training at RAF Valley as an Engineering Apprentice gaining practical experience and theoretical knowledge while working for Lockheed Martin, one of the world’s premier aerospace and defence companies.

This hands-on experience at RAF Valley was instrumental in shaping his early career, providing him with a solid foundation in engineering principles and practices to move on to the Higher National Certificate (HNC) programme in Engineering and ultimately his degree in Applied Electrical and Electronic Engineering Systems at Bangor University.

This degree apprenticeship was an opportunity for Jack to deepen his knowledge, engage in advanced studies, and undertake challenging projects. The rigorous academic environment at Bangor University, combined with the practical experience gained throughout his apprenticeship, culminated in Jack achieving a first-class honours degree.

Jack's success is not only a personal achievement but also a significant endorsement of the degree apprenticeship model. By combining academic studies with practical work experience, Jack was able to graduate debt-free, equipped with a degree and several years of relevant work experience.

Now, as a newly graduated engineer, Jack has started his role as a Simulator Maintenance Engineer on 72 Squadron, the Basic Flying Training squadron at No 4 Flying Training School at RAF Valley. In this position, he is responsible for maintaining and ensuring the operational readiness of flight simulators, critical tools in the training of RAF pilots.

Commenting after his graduation, Jack said:

"Completing my degree apprenticeship with Lockheed Martin has been an incredible experience. It’s proof that with dedication, the right opportunities and the support of a great employer, you can achieve your dreams without the burden of student debt. I hope my journey inspires others to pursue their passions with confidence."

Bangor University together with Grŵp Llandrillo Menai have a portfolio of fully funded qualifications covering Software Engineering, Cyber Security, Data Science and Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

Degree apprenticeships provide an attractive option for employers to embed cutting edge knowledge whilst developing an individual in a key role. They can be used to upskill an existing member of staff or appoint to a new Degree Apprenticeship role. Over a three-year period and whilst working the Degree Apprentice studies at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and University for a day and evening a week. Bangor University and Grŵp Llandrillo Menai are currently working with employers across North Wales, both large and small, public and private as well as social enterprises.
