Shahidah’s Journey to a Brighter Future through Adult Education

A part-time learner at Coleg Menai is building a promising future with the valuable opportunities and support she's received during her time at college.

Shahidah Shanaz, who moved to the UK from India in 2021, has proven that through determination and educational support, the sky's the limit. Her inspiring journey began at Coleg Menai’s Bangor campus, where she enrolled in Potensial’s ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programmes, completing both Level 1 and Level 2 in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Keen to further enhance her employability, Shahidah took the next step by joining Potensial’s programme, 'Introduction to being a Teaching Assistant' in September 2023. This course, which aims to boost confidence and employability, also equipped her with essential skills in employability, digital literacy, and communication. As part of the programme, Shahidah undertook a three-week work placement at a local school, giving her valuable hands-on experience.

Her hard work and enthusiasm have paid off. Shahidah has now been offered a 12-month volunteer placement at Our Lady's School, Bangor, where she works two days a week while studying for her QCF/NVQ Level 2 in Supporting Teaching and Learning with the support of Busnes@Llandrillo Menai’s Work-Based Learning team.

Louise Howe, Shahidah’s lecturer, said,

“Not only is Shahidah advancing her professional skills, but she is also learning her fourth language, Welsh—adding to her fluency in Urdu, Hindi, and English. Her commitment to integrating into the local community is commendable, and on successful completion of her studies, Shahidah hopes to secure full-time employment at a local school”

“Shahidah’s story is a testament to the power of lifelong learning, proving how education at any stage in life can be a catalyst for personal growth, professional development, and a brighter future. Well done Shahidah!”

"Adult education has opened so many doors for me," says Shahidah. "I feel more confident and capable than ever, and I’m excited about my future as a teaching assistant."

Aimee Jones, Headteacher at Our Lady's School, Bangor, said,

“Shahidah's enthusiasm and dedication to her role within our school is exemplary. She not only provides excellent support to the class teachers and children but also uses her initiative and is a hard worker, becoming a valued member of our school family. Shahida shows interest in learning about pedagogy and the curriculum for Wales and voluntarily attends meetings that she feels will benefit her development as a teaching assistant. We have been very lucky to have her as part of the team!”
