Students celebrate outstanding exam results at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai
Learners at Coleg Llandrillo, Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor are celebrating after another exceptional year of A Level and vocational results.
Pass rates at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai have increased since last year, with the college group achieving an impressive overall A Level pass rate of 99% (+2% vs 2023), with 77.3% A*-C (+3% vs 2023) and 23% of learners achieved the top-grades of A*-A (equal to 2023).
17% of Vocational learners have achieved the highest Distinction or Distinction* grade, and 290 achieved a Merit to Distinction* grade in their qualifications.
Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has achieved its best-ever results for acceptances by Russell Group Universities, with 64 students securing places, including one at Oxford University. A record six students have also gained the grades to study Medicine, the highest number in the group's history.
The Grŵp’s excellent A Level A*-C pass rate is above the UK and Welsh national comparators which has enabled learners to go on to study at prestigious Universities across the UK, including: King’s College London, University of Liverpool, University of Cardiff, University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester, University of Bristol and Bangor University, with some continuing their Higher Education on one of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s Degree programmes.
Grŵp Llandrillo Menai learners have been accepted onto a variety of subjects including Dentistry, Biochemistry, Psychology, English Literature, Engineering, Law and Criminology, Physics, Nursing, and Sports & Exercise Science.
Olivia Boyd attained an A* in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and an A grade in AS Further Mathematics. Ahead of receiving her results, she had already been offered an unconditional place and scholarship at Aberystwyth University to study Biochemistry.
She said:
“I really enjoyed studying for my A Levels at college. I've made a lot of new friends during my time here, and the lecturers are so supportive. College has improved my confidence and independence so much - thanks to all of my lecturers for being so supportive.”
Olaf Niechcial, from Tremadog, achieved A* in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and A in Computer Science and Physics.
Olaf said:
“College has helped me a lot to reach my full potential. Thanks to all the support from the staff and tutors I'm on my way to Oxford!
“College is an amazing place to study. The resources are the best throughout the country, the staff are so supportive. Thank you for everything.”
Having attained A* in Physics, A* in Biology and A* in Mathematics, Owen Lewis, who studied at Coleg Llandrillo, Rhyl campus will study Medicine at University of Liverpool in September.
He said:
“I cannot thank the staff at college enough for the fantastic experience I have had studying here. My lecturers took on my ambitions as if they were their own and have pushed me to do the best I can. I’ll always be grateful for how valued they have made me feel as a student.”
Gwenllian Jones, from Nefyn, achieved an impressive A* in Biology, and an A grade in both Chemistry and Physics. Her place at Bristol University to study Biochemistry has been confirmed.
She said: “I really enjoyed studying the sciences at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor. My lecturers’ enthusiasm for their subjects was evident, making their lessons engaging.
The laboratories are well equipped with modern facilities and the practical lab work in particular sparked my interest in the field of Biochemistry.”
Charley Lewis, from Holyhead, has secured a place at University of Liverpool to study English Literature after achieving A grades in Psychology, English Language and Literature, and Welsh Baccalaureate at Coleg Menai.
She said:
“My grades and quality of work and grades from secondary school compared to Coleg Menai show great improvement, and reflect the great quality of teaching from the staff.
“I had so many positive experiences while studying at Coleg Menai, including a trip to London, which was a fun and enriching experience.
“All the staff are also very helpful and are more than happy to provide help when needed. It is evident the staff care a lot about the subjects they teach and also care for us students and our success.”
Coleg Llandrillo learner Rose Hobdell is off to study English and Creative Writing at Northumbria University, having attained an A* in Art & Design Graphics, A in English Literature, and B in English Language.
She said:
“The college and tutors were really supportive, very different to what is was like doing my gcses. Thanks to all of my lecturers!”
Dylan Alford, who achieved a triple distinction starred in his Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science diploma, said: “The tutors were very helpful, the course went very well alongside rugby. It helped me to do extremely well in the course and build further skills in rugby. I enjoyed my time at college. It is a friendly place, and I am looking forward to the future and hoping to achieve furthermore in rugby.”
Coleg Menai learner, Llinos Evans, has achieved three Distinction* grades in her Sports and Exercise Science qualification. Her excellent grades mean she has secured her spot at Liverpool John Moores University to study Sport and Exercise Science.
She said:
“I’m so happy with the results I received today. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my tutors, especially Gareth Griffiths, my peers, and my family. Thank you all for helping me achieve this accomplishment.”
