Tesni is runner-up in Llaeth y Llan ‘Star Baker’ competition
The Coleg Llandrillo hospitality student impressed judges with a lemon loaf cake made using the Denbighshire company’s yoghurt
Coleg Llandrillo student Tesni Young was a runner-up in Llaeth y Llan’s ‘Become a Star Baker’ competition.
Tesni, who is studying Level 2 Hospitality and Catering at the Rhos-on-Sea campus, impressed judges with her lemon loaf cake.
The competition was open to bakers across the country, and tasked competitors with creating a culinary masterpiece using Llaeth y Llan yoghurt. They then had to upload a picture of their creation, along with the recipe.
Tesni was one of seven runners-up who earned special recognition. She won a signed copy of The Seasonal Baker by former Great British Bake Off star Michelle Evans-Fecci, and a Llaeth y Llan apron.
"I was really pleased to have won the competition,” said Tesni, from Betws yn Rhos, who used Llaeth y Llan’s lemon yoghurt in her recipe. “It was my first competition so it was good to be one of the runners-up.”
Tesni regularly bakes cakes at home, and hopes to one day open her own bakery or restaurant.
She is enjoying learning her trade in the professional environment of Coleg Llandrillo’s Orme View restaurant.
“I love the course,” said Tesni. “I’ve never had a day when I don’t feel like coming in. All my friends make it worthwhile, and the tutors make it really fun.
“There’s no exams, no essays, no pressure, but we learn new things every day, and it’s never repetitive.”
Nia Roberts, of Llaeth y Llan, said: “It was so nice that a young, local baker was a runner-up in our competition. We received so many varied and mouth-watering recipes and the standard was very high.
“We hope Tesni will take inspiration from the cookbook signed by Great British Bake Off contestant Michelle Evans Fecci, and keep baking!”
Llaeth y Llan’s award-winning yoghurt is produced by Village Dairy, based in Llannefydd, Denbighshire.
