Tom’s video wins Diwrnod Shwmae Su'mae prize
Coleg Llandrillo student Tom Roberts created a video featuring his favourite Welsh words alongside some of his own artwork
Tom Roberts won the Diwrnod Shwmae Su'mae competition celebrating learners’ favourite Welsh words.
The competition was arranged by Tîm Sgiliaith and was open to students across Grŵp Llandrillo Menai campuses.
It was held to celebrate Diwrnod Shwmae Su'mae, which encourages people to use whatever level of Welsh they can, by starting conversations with Su'mae or Shwmae.
Learners were asked to create a piece of art featuring their five favourite words.
Tom, who studies L2 Art & Design at Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhos-on-Sea campus, created a video featuring his favourite words alongside some of his own artwork.
Judges were impressed by his creativity, the visual impact of his piece, his use of different media including illustration, photography and music, and also his choice of words.

He said: “I tried to make mine a bit different and I was really excited to win.
“After doing Welsh in school I missed using it, and I think it’s important that we use the language as much as we can.”
Tom is in his first year at college, and said: “I’m really enjoying my course. I enjoy the freedom I have with my work, and also meeting new people as well.”
Grŵp Welsh Language Facilitator Samuel Stones said: “We had a lot of good responses to the competition, with 42 people entering from across all campuses. We had a variation of different entries, including posters, papier-mâché dragons and lots more.
“Tom’s entry was very visual and he’d put a lot of thought into it. The words he chose were really cool, some words we hadn’t had in the other competition entries, and we really liked the creative design of it with different types of work included.”
After winning the competition, Tom was presented a framed picture featuring an explanation of the word ‘hiraeth’, a mug designed by a local artist featuring Welsh words in the style of a London Underground map, and equipment for his course.
