Students learn about tourism, food and culture on Cologne trip

Level 3 Travel and Tourism learners visited the city’s famous markets and other attractions in ‘an amazing and eye-opening experience’

Coleg Menai students visited Cologne to learn about tourism and hospitality in the German city.

Learners studying Level 3 Travel and Tourism visited the city’s famous markets and other attractions including Cologne Cathedral, the Lindt Chocolate Museum and the Ludwig art museum.

They also enjoyed an evening Christmas cruise and meal on the Rhine river, saw the 400-metre long Hohenzollern Bridge - Germany’s busiest rail bridge - and visited the Cologne Triangle Observation Deck, which offers a breath-taking 360-degree view of the city from 29 storeys up.

During their four-night stay - which also included a day trip to Dusseldorf - the students learned about German food, culture, events, transport and more, bringing to life units taught on their course.

Learner Mia Eade described the trip as “an amazing and eye-opening experience”, while fellow student Ella Griffiths said: “The whole experience, trying different food and visiting the markets and cathedral, were all wonderful.

“The differences were so great, considering we were only an hour and a half away by plane. The buildings, the houses, the food, the language, were all so different.”

Catherine Skipp, Coleg Menai’s programme area manager for Service Industries and Business, said: “The learners had a brilliant experience touring Cologne’s markets and visiting other attractions.

“The activities on the trip helped to inform their assignment work, while they also gained invaluable experience of Germany’s culture and of opportunities to work in another country.”
