Community Learning Centre Opens on Bangor High Street

A brand new learning hub on Bangor’s High Street was officially opened by Ken Skates MS, the Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales yesterday (Thursday, March 13th).

‘Tŷ Cyfle’ provides free part-time courses and confidential legal advice to residents of Bangor and the surrounding areas. Free courses in employability, computing and digital literacy, sewing, digital photography and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) are being offered to anyone over the age of 18.

Working in partnership with the Welsh Government and Cyngor Gwynedd through the

Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme and the Transforming Towns

regeneration programme in partnership with Cyngor Gwynedd, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has remodelled the former Topshop retail outlet in the city centre, with the hope of creating a flourishing, vibrant space that will benefit the residents of Bangor and the wider area.

Tŷ Cyfle has four well-resourced teaching classrooms, along with dedicated meeting spaces, providing an ideal learning environment. With highly experienced staff, the site fosters a supportive and approachable setting that allows students to thrive, It particularly appeals to those who may be hesitant to attend courses at main college campuses.

In addition to the educational opportunities, Tŷ Cyfle is home to the new Bangor University Legal Advice Clinic, offering free, confidential legal support to the public. Provided by Bangor University law students and supervised by qualified solicitors and experienced senior lecturers, the clinic gives students hands-on experience while helping local residents navigate legal challenges. The clinic operates during term time and offers services in both Welsh and English.

"We understand that returning to education or work can feel overwhelming," said Siôn Peters-Flynn, Principal of Coleg Menai & Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor,

"Our goal is to offer a nurturing space where learners can build their confidence and skills, empowering them to take the next step in their personal and professional journeys."

“Whether you're looking to improve employability skills, enhance language proficiency, explore creative subjects like photography and sewing, or improve digital literacy, these courses are crafted to meet the needs of all learners, regardless of background or experience”.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said, “It’s great to see this facility on the high street right in the heart of Bangor city centre, supported by the Welsh Government. Not only does it use a former retail space creatively but also provides important services to help people learn new skills. The provision of legal advice by Bangor University law students will also be a valuable asset for the community.”

Councillor R Medwyn Hughes, Cabinet Member for Economy and Community at Cyngor Gwynedd, said,

"Supporting projects that contribute to revitalising town centres is a key priority for Cyngor Gwynedd, with Bangor being a regional focus. Initiatives like Tŷ Cyfle bring a much-needed boost to the High Street, transforming an empty retail space into a vibrant learning and support hub.

“By investing in projects like this, we are not only helping individuals develop valuable skills but also strengthening the local economy, creating new work opportunities, and ensuring Bangor thrives as a key centre for the region."

Tracey Horton, Solicitor and Clinic Director at Bangor University, said,

“The Bangor University Legal Advice Clinic is a great opportunity for both our students and the community. It allows our students to gain practical experience while providing valuable legal support to those in need.
