Bilingual Teaching Methodology MA Module

Course Description

The fact that practitioners can speak Welsh and English does not automatically mean they are confident to work in a professional bilingual environment. Confidence and enthusiasm are also essential to ensure that learners have every opportunity to use and develop their language of choice and their bilingual personal skills.

The purpose of the 30 credit module at level M (7), ‘Bilingual Teaching Methodology’, is to prepare practitioners to do this. The training aims to increase the number of practitioners who teach bilingually, leading in turn to an increase in the level and confidence of learners’ language use in an educational setting. They will be prepared to work confidently and effectively in Welsh and English, using the two languages in a balanced and appropriate way according to the language needs of the learning group.

Entry Criteria

The module is aimed at tutors and lecturers in the FE and apprenticeship sector, who can communicate fluently in English and Welsh but lack the confidence to teach mixed language groups. Bangor University’s guidelines state that applicants must either have;

  • an initial degree,
  • a recognised equivalent qualification,
  • or be over 25 years of age with at least two years of relevant professional experience.

Delivery

The five day sessions will focus on the various factors that should be taken into account in order to maintain effective bilingual teaching and learning. These will include:

  • Creating a bilingual ethos;
  • Teaching and learning methodologies in a bilingual setting;
  • Planning lessons and activities in a bilingual teaching and learning setting;
  • Preparing and utilising resources for teaching and learning in a bilingual setting;
  • Language registers;
  • The potential of ITC to support teaching and learning in a bilingual setting;
  • Identifying the language level and bilingualism of individuals, and tracking progress in language levels;
  • The context of Welsh-medium and bilingual education in Wales;
  • An introduction to theories regarding bilingual teaching and learning appropriate to post-14 education in Wales.

Assessment

There are three tasks to complete within the course:

  • Task 1.1 and 1.2 - Microteaching session and teaching observation in the practitioners' organisation;
  • Task 2 - Written reflective evaluation of personal practice;
  • Task 3 - Action research (record and critical evaluation of the use of Welsh and English in the classroom/workshop by a group of learners over a specific period).

There will also be a need for personal study.

Progression

Sgiliaith’s National Staff Development Programme provides innovative training and mentoring programme to staff in the further education and apprenticeships sectors. The purpose of this programme is to support practitioners to offer Welsh medium and bilingual provision to both learners and apprentices.

Sgiliaith’s Staff Development Training Programme offers a range of development opportunities to support the progression of practitioners’ bilingual skills, whilst Sgiliaith’s Staff Mentoring Programme offers support to practitioners in real learning situations to embed Welsh/bilingualism in the classroom or workplace.

Sgiliaith’s development opportunities are suitable for everyone working in the sector, regardless of Welsh language skills or previous experience.

Sgiliaith's provision is funded for further education and apprenticeship staff by Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. Browse all of our courses here.
