Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) for UK Students
DSA provides financial support for UK students with additional learning needs / disabilities, helping with study-related needs, physical access, and well-being. It is not means-tested, does not need to be repaid (unless you leave your course early, in which case you may be required to repay a portion) and provides access to various support services.
What DSA Can Fund:
- Specialist equipment (e.g., ergonomic chairs, assistive technology).
- Non-medical helpers (e.g., study skills tutors, mental health/autism mentors, BSL interpreters).
- Assistive technology training to help you use allocated tools effectively.
- Other study-related support (e.g., printing, ink cartridges).
- Extra travel costs related to your disability.
What DSA Does Not Fund:
- Disability costs unrelated to your course, such as personal or social care.

How to Apply:
You can apply for DSA even before starting your course or confirming your university place.
- Apply online through your funding provider:
Needs Assessment:
If you're eligible, you'll be invited to a needs assessment, which is an informal discussion. During the meeting, your learning needs and any barriers will be discussed, and the assessor will suggest support that could help you.
The assessment takes about 1-2 hours, and you can bring someone with you if you'd prefer not to go alone.
After your assessment, you'll receive a draft report with recommended equipment and support
Requesting Additional Support:
If you need more DSA-funded support during your studies, contact your DSA Needs Assessment Centre to request additional recommendations after your needs assessment.
If your centre is no longer available, tell your funding provider to be assigned a new one.
Changes to Your Circumstances:
If your circumstances change, contact your DSA funding provider (e.g., Student Finance Wales) to update your support entitlement.
If you have any questions or need further guidance, please contact the ALN team at aln@gllm.ac.uk.
