Course Description
As part of your programme of study, you will complete a Level 3 Applied Science qualification. This will provide the knowledge, understanding and skills for learners wishing to enter a career as a science technician in the areas of laboratory and industrial science, medical science service or the forensic science service.
This programme of study will provide you with access to more specialist units and therefore broadens and deepens your experience in preparation for the world of work.
It also provides progression to higher education vocational qualifications such as a Higher National Certificate/Diploma, a Foundation degree or an Honours degree.
Entry Criteria
In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:
- 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths. GCSE Double Award Science at grade CC or GCSE Biology and GCSE Chemistry grade C.
- GCSE Applied Science / BTEC Applied Science at Merit
- Relevant industry experience
You will also require an attendance level of 86% in your previous year of study.
As part of the application process, you will be asked to attend an interview to give you the opportunity to discuss the course.
Delivery
Approximately 50% of the time will be spent looking at the basic concepts and using them.
Classwork will often start off by looking at the relevant notes together as a group, adding key facts and emphasising particular points. This will be followed up by looking at problems either in small groups or individually.
The remaining time will be practically based, working on experiments closely linked to the theory covered.
Your programme will include a combination of:
- Essential Skills qualifications and/or
- GCSE resits and/or
- The Welsh Baccalaureate
Welsh Baccalaureate
Welsh Baccalaureate is a valuable qualification which is often studied alongside your Level 3 full-time course.
The qualification is graded A*-E, carrying the equivalent UCAS points at Level 3, and equips you with transferable personal and business skills. It is highly regarded by universities and employers alike.
As part of the qualification, you will learn about Global Citizenship, Enterprise and Employability and take part in community engagement and work experience.
Essential Skills
This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills
GCSE resits
This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.
Maths & Welsh/English
If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.
Assessment
This is a practical, work-based course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic work place activities and demands. There are 18 units to complete.
Progression
Successful completion provides progression to employment. If you want to get a job straight away, you could work in areas such as:
- the Science industry
- a laboratory as a technician
- a hospital
Alternatively, you could continue into higher education to study a vocational qualification such as a Higher National Certificate/Diploma, a Foundation degree or an Honours degree, in subjects such as:
- Forensic Science
- Applied Science
- Biomedical Sciences
- Social Policy
- Photography
- Nursing
- Radiography
- Applied Chemistry
At Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, you would be able to progress onto the BA (Hons) Public and Social Policy, or the Foundation Degree (FdSc) Policing.
