Course Description

This course provides you with the skills, training and technical knowledge for a career, apprenticeship or university degree in Motorsports.

All training is provided in industry-standard engineering workshops and technology-focused classrooms. A further 150 hours of industry placements will be undertaken in the first year.

The focus of the course is to develop Motorsport Engineers of the future. Some units will develop knowledge and understanding of vehicle technology while other units will focus on the application of maths, science and the skills needed to improve vehicle performance.

As well as undertaking a 1.5 ‘A’ Level equivalent BTEC and a vocational skills course in Year 1, there will be opportunities to volunteer as safety officers at motorsport rallies, modify a road vehicle to a Rally Standard and participate as a Motorsport Engineer at a race track, with a college Rally Vehicle modified by you.

Entry Criteria

You must have an interest and passion for Motorsport.

In order to qualify for this course you will need at least one of the following:

  • 5 GCSEs A*- C including 1st Language English or Welsh and Mathematics or Numeracy and a Science subject.
  • Successfully completed Engineering Level 2

As part of the application process you will be asked to attend an interview.

Delivery

The programme will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Practical sessions in industry standard workshops
  • Classroom sessions, with specialist software on high performance PCs
  • Student centred work and projects
  • Practical demonstrations on motor vehicles
  • Discussions and visits with the motorsport industry
  • Remote learning
  • Pastoral care
  • You will have to complete 150 hours of work experience

Welsh Baccalaureate

Welsh Baccalaureate is a valuable qualification which is often studied alongside your Level 3 full-time course.

The qualification is graded A*-E, carrying the equivalent UCAS points at Level 3, and equips you with transferable personal and business skills. It is highly regarded by universities and employers alike.

As part of the qualification, you will learn about Global Citizenship, Enterprise and Employability and take part in community engagement and work experience.

Essential Skills

This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills

GCSE resits

This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.

Maths & Welsh/English

If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.

Progression

Successful completion of this course gives the following options for progression:

  • a second year to top-up to an Extended Diploma (3 A Level equivalent)
  • Motor Vehicle or Motorsport Apprenticeship
  • Automotive Engineering or Motorsport Degree at University (Year 2 must be completed)
  • Role in automotive industry
