Pathway 3 - FoundationFull-Time (Further Education)
Please note: We recommend that you have access to a laptop or Chromebook to enable coursework to be completed digitally at home. There is a dedicated IT Digital Inclusion fund to support those learners who do not have a digital device and are unable to purchase one.
Course Description
These courses will give learners the confidence to be more independent and enable them to gain skills to access the world of work, or to access further vocational courses within the college.
These courses are aimed at school leavers who wish to further develop their numeracy and literacy skills. Learners will need to be working at least at E2 and above in Literacy and Numeracy, attend a successful interview or taster course to make sure the course is right for them, and be able to access college independently.
Entry Criteria
An offer of a place on this course is subject to a successful outcome from a series of transition meetings and a referral from Social Services, School Additional Needs Coordinator, Special schools, Independent specialist schools and colleges and Careers Wales.
Progressing learners: Completion of programme of learning and working at Entry 3. In non-accredited learning programmes you will complete a literacy and numeracy assessment for RARPA. In addition to this an observational assessment will take place during a transition event which will help to agree appropriate targets.
Literacy/Numeracy: West E2/E3 Literacy and Numeracy
Delivery
The programme is delivered through a mix of practical and classroom-based activities that promote learners’ independence, choice and decision making, confidence and social skills. Learners will be taught in small groups.
Assessment
After setting and agreeing individual targets, learners may be assessed through a variety of methods which meet their individual learning needs. Learners may complete a formal qualification where appropriate.
Progression
Paid or voluntary employment in the local area, work opportunities within the community, further learning opportunities and other training opportunities, if appropriate.

- give support to progress onto the next step e.g. the Pre Vocational Course; Sgiliau i Waith/Skills for Work traineeship.

Develops the learners to enable them to:
- Develop their personal, social and emotional skills though the 4 Pillar of ILS curriculum through a non-accredited learning programme.
- Develops application of practical literacy and numeracy skills for independent living within the timetabled Skillbuild sessions - time, money, use of public transport, etc.
- Self-confidence and motivation skills
- Plans and ideas for future career goals.
Provides:
- Educational visits - related to the 4 Pillars of ILS curriculum.
- Practical Life Skills - practical cookery in our ILS kitchen, Independent living skills in our purpose built flat at Canolfan Marl, public bus training, money skills, etc.
- Group Work Experience opportunities.
- Supported employment pathway tasters in preparation for progression to our Step Up to Work Programmes - currently offering vocational pathways in sport, leisure, hospitality, catering, horticulture and retail.
- Practical sport sessions.
- Outdoor learning sessions that can potentially lead to taking part in Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
